Windows Phone is an operating system for mobile phones from the software manufacturer Microsoft and the continuation of the Windows Mobile software , which was renamed Windows Phone Classic as part of the introduction of Windows Phone 7. The associated online shop for applications and games is the Windows Phone Store .
Devices with Windows Phone 7 were available in Germany and Austria since October 21, 2010. Windows Phone 7 development was completed in early September 2010.
Windows Phone is designed for operation with fingers and multi-touch , while Windows Mobile was based on the surface of the desktop versions of Windows and relies on operation with the help of input pens.
Conceptually, the Windows Phone user interface is based on the Zune HD.
ZTE had to pay between 18 and 24 euros per device for a Windows Phone 7 license.

The mainstream support phase for Windows Phone 7.8 lasted until October 14, 2014.
Hubs and Live Tiles
Microsoft has divided the main areas of contacts, office, pictures, social networks, music, video and games into "hubs". These hubs represent the basis for further functions that are directly integrated into the operating system and that can be integrated into the so-called "Live Tiles" as an interactive button on the start screen with the help of drag and drop . Its display changes if there is a software update or a status change in the application. In this way, all contacts from Facebook , Outlook , Google Mail and z. B. summarize Twitter and show status changes directly on the home screen. The user can also interact with his contacts via the device.
Xbox Live and Games
The "Games" hub provides a link to Xbox Live . It is therefore possible to purchase multimedia articles for the device via the marketplace . These games can be fully integrated with Xbox Live services. For example, two players (one on the Xbox 360 and one on a Windows Phone device) can play against each other. In addition, games can be created with Visual Studio as a cross-platform project for PC , Windows Phone device and Xbox . A user can start a game on the PC, continue playing on the mobile phone and end it on the Xbox.
Hardware requirements
Phones using Windows Phone 7 must meet certain requirements set by Microsoft. The device must have at least 512 MB of RAM and at least 8 GB of flash memory. A compass, a GPS receiver and an acceleration and position sensor must also be installed. Another requirement is a capacitive multi- touch screen . In addition, a device must have at least a 5-megapixel camera as well as a cellular and WLAN interface. For cell phones with Windows Phone 7, only three types of housing may be used: touch screen cell phones, touch screen cell phones with fold-out QWERTY keyboards and the classic bar shape. On the housing itself, three buttons for the functions "Back", "Search" and "Homescreen" must be found under the touchscreen.
Furthermore, the integrated processor must have a clock frequency of at least one gigahertz and a separate graphics processor with DirectX -9 support must be installed. In this configuration, all Windows Phone 7 devices should be HD-capable. In addition, Microsoft prohibits manufacturers from customizing the Windows Phone 7 interface, as, for example, HTC did with Windows Phone Classic using its own HTC Sense interface.
The HTC Arrive also supports CDMA2000 cellular networks in the USA .
With the “Tango” update to “Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh”, the minimum hardware requirements have been reduced in order to be able to bring cheaper devices to the market. The minimum requirements are an 800 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM. Telephones with such hardware, however, also result in functional losses in the operating system. Features like background tasks, Bing Local Scout and automatic upload of photos to OneDrive are not available here. In addition, about 5% of the applications in the Marketplace, including Skype and Angry Birds, do not work due to the reduced RAM . The first representative of these less equipped Windows Phones is the Nokia Lumia 610 .

On October 11th, 2010 the first Windows Phone devices were presented. Two months after the start of sales, a total of around 1.5 million mobile devices with Windows Phone 7 were delivered to dealers , according to Microsoft .
In the first quarter of 2011, around 2.5 million devices with WP7 were brought onto the market worldwide and 1.6 million devices were sold to end customers. The Windows market share in the smartphone market (together with Windows Mobile, of which around 2 million devices were sold in the first quarter of 2011) fell from 6.8% in the first quarter of 2010 to 3.6%. According to Gartner estimates, Microsoft's market share in the second quarter of 2011 was around 1.6% (after 4.9% in the second quarter of 2010), and fell further in the third quarter of 2011 to 1.5%.
With the alliance between Microsoft and Nokia announced on February 11, 2011, Windows Phone became the preferred operating system on Nokia smartphones. On October 26, 2011, the first two devices with Windows Phone 7.5 were presented at Nokia World 2011 . On November 15, 2011, the first Nokia device with Windows Phone 7.5 - the Nokia Lumia 800 - appeared in Germany and Austria. Microsoft financially supported Nokia for the use of Windows Phone; in the 4th quarter of 2011 these payments amounted to 250 million euros.
Software development / application compatibility
Software for Windows Phone 7 is developed with C # and Visual Basic .NET in the technologies Silverlight and XNA . As a result, the applications available for Windows Mobile no longer work on Windows Phone 7. Among other things, Firefox Mobile will not appear for Windows Phone 7. Microsoft provides the free "Windows Phone Developer Tools" package for development for the Windows Phone system. It includes Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, an emulator , the Silverlight and XNA resources and Expression Blend for designing the interfaces. The developer tools are compatible with Visual Studio 2010 and are only available for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Multitasking has been restricted on the grounds that background processes can greatly reduce battery life. Native applications such as the telephone, music player or web browser can remain open in the background. Third-party apps, on the other hand, do not run in the background. However, when you exit, the status is saved (tombstoning) so that when you call it up, you jump to the point at which you left the application. The concept is comparable to the implementation of “multitasking” on iOS. Since Windows Phone 7.5 there are interfaces for background tasks such as audio playback or data traffic. The user can define for each application whether background tasks are allowed in order to optimize energy consumption.
criticism
Windows Phone 7 has received some criticism in the trade press and from users. a. due to the fact that it is a closed system similar to Apple's iOS and that various functions familiar from Windows Phone Classic, formerly Windows Mobile, are missing. For example, Windows Mobile programs could be copied to a memory card, inserted into the cell phone and started by tapping the EXE file in the included file explorer.
A Windows Live ID is required for the useful use of the mobile phone functions, especially the Marketplace. As soon as this is set up, Windows Phone 7 synchronizes the entire mobile phone directory and calendar entries with the live account on the Internet without warning. The synchronization can subsequently be set to "manual" via the account management and thus deactivated.
Another point of criticism is that Windows Phone 7 cannot synchronize directly with Outlook via local connections (WLAN, USB, Bluetooth). The internal memory of a smartphone is not recognized as mass storage by other devices (this can be changed under Windows by accessing the registry ). No expansion with memory cards is possible. However, since the internal memory itself is only a microSDHC card, it can only be replaced if the guarantee is void, as the device's housing has to be opened. In addition, many common Bluetooth profiles are not supported by Windows Phone 7, so it is not possible to receive files via Bluetooth.
The original browser in Windows Phone 7, based on Internet Explorer 7, was also criticized because it only achieved 5% of the points in the Acid3 benchmark . After updating to Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango), the browser, which is now based on Internet Explorer 9, achieved 100% of the points in the Acid3 browser test.
There are also problems with the mobile Office package. So are z. For example, more complex Excel sheets created on the desktop can run without problems under Windows Mobile 6.1, with Windows Phone 7, use is sometimes only possible with restrictions. This lack of compatibility caused criticism. To do this, minor changes can be made to PowerPoint presentations, while Windows Mobile only offered a display program. In the Windows Phone native email program, you can only attach images directly; For all other file types (such as Office documents), the program responsible for this must offer a function for transferring these files to a new e-mail.
The update to version 7.8 released at the end of January 2013 led to complaints. The “Live Tiles” on the start page, which provide the user with information, constantly asked for new information on the Internet and could not be updated. As a result, the battery life of smartphones was shortened enormously. After the network operator Vodafone stopped delivering the update for its branded devices, Microsoft also responded to the complaints and stopped distributing the update completely for all devices. The error was fixed on March 15, 2013 with a new update.
Mail retrieval no longer possible
Since the end of 2014, most mail providers have no longer been able to access mail. Because of the Poodle security vulnerability, most server operators have switched off the outdated SSL protocol. Windows Phone 7 does not support the newer TLS protocol.
