Windows XP Embedded is an operating system from Microsoft . It is a modularized version of Windows XP Professional that allows only some of the components to be installed on the target PC. Special installation tools are available for this (more on this below). Areas of use are exclusively PC-like devices based on an x86 processor , whereby PCs in the narrower sense are excluded from use by license. This distinguishes it from Windows CE , which also supports the MIPS and ARM architectures.

Windows XP Embedded is completely modular. Modules include Windows Media Player (8 or 10), Internet Explorer 6, a firewall , Windows Explorer , DirectX 9 and .NET 3.1. XP Embedded can be reduced to a memory consumption on the hard drive , flash or USB stick of at least 34 MB. Typical installations with a graphical user interface and network are around 200–500 MB. The individual modules can be combined with the so-called “Target Designer” to form a full-fledged operating system memory image that is adapted to the requirements . It is also possible, for. B. to encapsulate self-developed software in a module, which can then be edited like the ones supplied.

It is mostly used in retail cash registers (e.g. McDonald’s , Aral , Deutsche Bahn ). Other possible uses include ATMs , oscilloscopes , gaming machines , thin clients , digital cameras , car PCs or consumer electronics devices. As an example, Windows XP Embedded is used on DHL Packstations . It is also of interest for industrial applications due to the possibility of tailoring it to requirements (e.g. for PC-based controls). It can run on devices without a keyboard, mouse, monitor or hard drive. In contrast to Windows 7 Embedded, it does not yet have any real onboard touchscreen support. Only ELO software including its monitors can be used for this purpose. B. Use a visualization.

There is a free 120-day test version of the system, during the test period of which a user can test the scope of the embedded system . With the trial version, a trial version notice is displayed in the desktop background.

Windows Embedded Standard 2009 is the successor to the Windows XP Embedded system .
