Windows Essential Business Server was a server suite from Microsoft for small and medium-sized businesses .

overview

Microsoft offered two editions, Standard and Premium, both of which were based on Windows Server 2008 Standard . The Standard Edition included licenses for three Windows Server 2008 x64 Standard Server instances. The following server products have been integrated on these three server instances (physical or virtual) and are installed by a common installation routine: Microsoft Exchange 2007, Microsoft System Center Essentials , Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) Medium Business Edition .

In addition to all components of the Standard Edition, the Premium Version contained an additional license for an instance of Windows Server 2008 in the Standard Edition and the database software Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

The Essential Business Server could be managed through a centralized and expandable administration console. However, it also offered experienced administrators direct access to all standard administration tools such as the Exchange 2007 administration console, which could also be called via the EBS administration console. The possibilities of the Windows Server 2008 terminal technologies were used in that the administration tools of remote computers were sometimes called up as so-called streamed applications from the EBS administrator console. In addition, the console offered the possibility of monitoring the computers on the network. For this, the software used the monitoring data from Microsoft System Center Essentials.

The console could be extended by third parties via an SDK provided by Microsoft . Essential Business Server also included the remote web workstation , a web-based solution for remote access to e-mails via Outlook Web Access , Sharepoint as well as the possibility of accessing the computers of the internal network via a secure, authenticated connection via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP ) to access. These RDP connections are made via the Terminal Services Gateway and therefore only need the SSL standard port TCP / 443 to establish a connection. This port was also exclusively required for all other services of the remote web workstation.

On March 5, 2010, Microsoft announced that the Windows Essential Business Server would be discontinued on June 30, 2010 due to the low demand for the product. Microsoft recommended that users migrate to the individual products Windows Server 2008 R2 , Exchange Server 2010 , System Center Essentials 2010, Forefront Security for Exchange Server 2010, and Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010. From June 30, 2010 to December 31, 2010, Microsoft offered Standalone - Windows Server 2008 Standard , System Center Essentials 2007, and Exchange Server 2007 products free of charge to current Essential Business Server customers.
