Microsoft Server 2016

Windows Server 2016 is a server operating system from Microsoft .

It was developed parallel to Windows 10 as part of the Windows NT family. The first technical preview version was published on October 1, 2014 together with the technical preview of the System Center and was in the public beta phase (until September 2016) . The final version of Windows Server 2016 was published on October 12, 2016 at Microsoft's Ignite Conference , instead of simultaneously with the corresponding client operating systems, as was often the case before. A 180-day trial is available as a public download.

Support for Windows Server 2016 and thus the delivery of security updates will end on January 12, 2027.

Functions

Windows Server 2016 includes some new features:

  • Active Directory Federation Services: It is possible to assign users who are not in AD systems, such as B. x.500 LDAP and SQL databases are entered, to manage and authenticate.
  • Windows Defender : Windows Server Antimalware is now installed by default without a GUI, which can be installed later.
  • Remote Desktop: Supports OpenGL 4.4 and OpenCL 1.1 with increased performance and stability.
  • Storage Spaces Direct: Enables the local hard disks ( SATA , SAS , NVMe ) of a Windows Server 2016 cluster to be combined into a single logical pool. This eliminates the need for a SAN .
  • Storage Replica: This is a block-based replication service that keeps the data on two volumes in a cluster at different locations synchronized.
