Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP) is a thin client operating system from Microsoft . WinFLP is based on Windows XP Embedded and is optimized for older, less powerful hardware. It was released on July 8, 2006 and is not marketed as a full, general-purpose operating system, although functionally it is capable of performing most tasks. It only contains certain functionalities for local workloads such as security, administration, document monitoring and the .NET Framework . It is designed to work with client-server solutions, RDP clients or other third-party clients. Support was discontinued together with Windows XP on April 8, 2014. The successor is the Windows Thin PC based on Windows Embedded 7.

history

WinFLP was originally codenamed "Eiger" on May 12, 2005. The name "Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs" appeared in a press release in September 2005.

The RTM version of Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs was released on July 8, 2006. The release was announced to the press on July 12, 2006. In May 2011 Microsoft announced Windows Thin PC as the successor product.

Technical specifications

Microsoft positions WinFLP as the operating system that provides basic computing services on legacy hardware while providing core administrative functions of newer versions of Windows such as Windows Firewall , Group Policy , automatic updates, and other management services. However, according to Microsoft, it is not considered a universal operating system. Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs is a Windows XP Embedded derivative and is therefore optimized for older PCs.

It requires significantly fewer system resources than Windows XP. It also has basic networking, advanced peripheral support, DirectX, and the ability to launch the remote desktop clients from compact discs.

The installer for Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs uses a modern GUI -based installation process similar to that in Windows Vista or Windows Embedded 2009 .

advantages

In addition to better performance on older PCs, the reduced number of files increases startup speed and the reduced number of services also improves security and responsiveness.

System requirements

Despite the optimization for older PCs, the hardware requirements are similar to those of Windows XP. In practice, it runs faster on older processors and tends to use less memory when idle .

Limitations to Windows XP

Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs has fewer features than Windows XP. Windows FLP does not contain Paint , Outlook Express or any of Windows' own games. Another limitation is the lack of compatibility mode .

Internet Explorer 8 (and 7) can be installed, but requires a hotfix, otherwise the installation will fail.

Others

Windows FLP is only available to Microsoft Software Assurance customers, as it is a cost-effective upgrade option for companies that still have old hardware that cannot run Windows XP or newer. It is not available for retail or OEM distribution.

On October 7, 2008, Service Pack 3 was made available for Windows Embedded for Point of Service and Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs.

On April 18, 2013, Service Pack 3 for Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (version 3) was made available.

Windows FLP has the same lifecycle policy as Windows XP; Extended support ended on April 8, 2014.
