Windows MultiPoint Server (WMS) is a variant of the Windows Server operating system from software manufacturer Microsoft for providing several independent workstations on a single computer. The user terminals can be connected directly via USB and video cables, via a network connection and remote desktop services.

The 2010 version of the system was first developed by Microsoft India for cost-effective use in educational institutions .

Windows MultiPoint Server 2010

Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 was the first generation of the system based on Windows Server 2008 R2 . Contrary to what the term server suggests, this generation is not geared towards communicating with clients according to the client-server model . The individual workstations can be connected directly to the host system over a short distance, usually via USB for the input devices and video cables directly to a graphics card . Alternatively, thin clients can be used via a network connection.

In addition to licenses for educational institutions, licenses for OEMs were offered that do not allow administration by a domain controller .

Windows MultiPoint Server 2011

Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 is the second generation and, as a major change, allows the additional connection of RDP clients through use as a terminal server . It is based on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and was released in March 2011.

The system is available in two versions, the Standard Edition and the Premium Edition , which allows management by a domain controller and increases the maximum permissible resources and connections.

Windows MultiPoint Server 2012

In November 2012 Microsoft released the third generation of the system with Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 . It is based on Windows Server 2012 and offers users a Windows 8 desktop and the possibility to work with virtual machines .

Windows Server 2016

With the release of Windows Server 2016 in October 2016, MultiPoint is no longer available as a standalone product, but is provided as a server role in Windows Server 2016.

Windows Server 2019

In Windows Server 2019 , MultiPoint will no longer be part of Windows Server for new installations, but will only remain installed for an update installation from a previous Windows Server version.
