Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2011 , like its predecessor Windows Small Business Server 2008, is a network operating system for small businesses. It is based on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010. The Small Business Server 2011 is the last Small Business Server from Microsoft . The successor is the Windows Server 2012 Essentials . The internal version number is NT 6.1.

properties

A maximum of 75 users can be connected to the server . SBS 2011 is based on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 is not integrated, but can be installed later. The Standard Edition supports up to four processors (also with multiple cores) and up to 32 GB of RAM.

SBS 2011 also contains Exchange Server 2010 SP1, also in the Standard Edition. This means that companies can also use the administration tools of Exchange 2010 to manage extended functions of Exchange , such as guidelines for mobile devices or multiple databases . Administrators can create up to five mailbox databases on the server: each can be up to 16 Tbytes in size.

The Exchange databases cannot be integrated into SQL , but are still independent. Microsoft has improved OWA (Outlook Web App) web access . The functions are similar to those of Outlook 2010 . It is possible to connect smartphones that have ActiveSync licensed (including Windows Phone 7 , iPhones or Nokia phones) to the server. Another innovation is the improved support of Safari and Firefox for OWA access. These browsers can now use all functions of OWA.

Editions

The Small Business Server 2011 is available in two versions, Standard and Essentials.

Standard Edition

The SBS in the standard version is the best known version. It has changed only minimally since 2003 and is suitable for an environment of up to 75 users. The SBS contains an Exchange Server 2010 SP1, a Sharepoint Foundation 2010 and a WSUS . Client access licenses (CALs) are required to access this server; five CALs are already included with the purchase of the OEM version.

Essentials Edition

The “Essentials” version has been new since SBS 2011, it is practically the little brother of the standard version. A maximum of 25 users may work with the SBS 2011 Essentials; apart from the server license, no client licenses are required. The SBS Essentials contains no Exchange, no Sharepoint and no WSUS , a connection of the server to the Microsoft Cloud and the use of e.g. B. Office365.
