Microsoft ActiveSync (offline) ( Memento from August 26, 2010 in the Internet Archive )

ActiveSync is software from Microsoft for data synchronization between a Windows PC and a mobile device. Various Microsoft products are supported; as of the Windows Vista operating system , the software is no longer supported and is replaced by Windows Mobile Device Center .

Microsoft also uses the term ActiveSync to refer to other things:

  1. A protocol that Microsoft Exchange Server uses to communicate with Windows Mobile clients and other devices that have licensed the ActiveSync protocol .
  2. The client program for Windows Mobile that implements the ActiveSync protocol on handhelds running Windows Mobile.

Both ActiveSync for Windows Mobile and the ActiveSync protocol are being further developed by Microsoft. In the following, the ActiveSync software for PCs is exclusively mentioned; the protocol of the same name is described in the article Exchange ActiveSync .

The software enables access to the folder structure, contacts and appointments of the mobile device and synchronizes changes in the Personal Information Manager made on the PC or PDA . The conversion of file types from the desktop version to the format of the mobile program is only available for data that has been processed in Microsoft's own program Outlook , Excel , Word . Files can be kept by the Exchange server or in the folder intended for files and are synchronized during synchronization. Other programs can be synchronized with the mobile device using third-party solutions.

Alternatives

There are several alternatives to ActiveSync, each with a different range of functions and different compatibility with PC software and mobile devices. Most of these offers (such as Intellisync Mobile Suite and Sprite Backup ), unlike ActiveSync, are chargeable. In the area of free software, there is the alternative OpenSync , which is available free of charge for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

successor

As the successor to ActiveSync, Microsoft offers the Windows Mobile Device Center software for Windows Vista and 7 as a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. The Windows Mobile Device Center version 6.1 is only to be used for smartphones on which Windows Mobile 2003 or higher is installed.
