The BlackBerry OS (proper spelling BlackBerry OS , up to the fifth issue known as BlackBerry Device Software , also known as Research In Motion OS ) is a proprietary , free usable ( Freeware ) Multitasking - operating system for smartphones . It is being developed by Blackberry (formerly Research In Motion ) for their Blackberry branded devices . Apps can be purchased in the associated Blackberry World Store. The successor to Blackberry OS is called Blackberry 10 .

It is programmed in C ++ and offers a Java environment ( J2ME - MIDP ) with special interfaces for the operation of (service / application) programs. A special programming interface is available to third-party developers . The e-mail functions of the platform are an integral and best-known part of the functionality. According to Gartner , it was one of the most important operating systems for mobile phones with a market share of 17.5 percent in 2010, although its importance was forecast to decline. In 2012 the market share had fallen to around 5 percent, in the 2nd quarter of 2013 it had already fallen to 2.7%.

Blackberry 10

Blackberry OS has now been replaced by Blackberry 10 based on QNX . Its first version was presented on October 19, 2011. The manufacturer's first device with the new operating system was the Blackberry Z10 , which was introduced on January 30, 2013 and sold in Great Britain a day later. Since then, all new products, with one exception, have been equipped with Blackberry 10. In August 2013, Blackberry presented the "9720", an entry-level smartphone with Blackberry OS 7.1.
