Blackberry OS 10 |
Blackberry 10 ( spelling BlackBerry 10 ) is an operating system from the Canadian company Blackberry , which has been installed on Blackberry brand smartphones since the end of January 2013 . The system was presented as a replacement for the “classic” predecessor Blackberry OS on October 19, 2011 at the in-house developer conference DevCon in San Francisco . The manufacturer's first device with the new operating system was the Blackberry Z10 , which was introduced on January 30, 2013 and sold in Great Britain a day later. Blackberry 10 is largely based on the QNX operating system and its microkernel .
Interface and operation
Blackberry devices of the Z-series can also be controlled without buttons, i.e. only via the touchscreen . Gesture control is particularly important, such as releasing the smartphone with a swipe from the bottom to the top of the screen.
The central component of the operating system is the "hub", which collects messages from various sources. Calls, short messages , tweets , Facebook messages and e-mails from all accounts that have been set up are summarized in one overview. As of version 10.2, new notifications are also displayed within an application in the upper area of the screen - this makes it possible, for example, to answer an e-mail in parallel in the open browser.
When the smartphone is unlocked, in contrast to other operating systems such as Android, the task manager appears first with the apps open.
Blackberry has confirmed a partnership with Amazon. With the current version of the operating system, version number 10.3, the Amazon App Store is integrated into the system. Blackberry expects a much larger selection of apps from the integration.
technology
Blackberry 10 was completely redesigned, as the target system is no longer exclusively smartphones, but also tablet PCs such as the Blackberry Playbook . The core of the operating system comes from QNX, whose proprietary real-time operating system is used in many embedded systems and is used, for example, in plant control or the automotive industry. According to information from RIM, apps for Blackberry 10 can be developed in C and C ++ , and HTML5 is also supported. According to media reports, it should also be possible to run Android apps on Blackberry 10. Blackberry 10 is approved for confidential communication by NATO authorities.
Trademark rights
After the announcement of Blackberry 10 under the name “BBX” it became known that this might violate the naming rights of the software company Basis. The company has announced that it will take legal action against Research In Motion. In the meantime, a US court has banned the use of the name "BBX", whereupon Blackberry changed it to "Blackberry 10".
