Blackberry World ( spelling BlackBerry World ) is an app store for the Blackberry OS smartphone operating system as well as Blackberry 10 and Blackberry PlayBook OS from Blackberry . Until 2013 the name was still Blackberry App World, then music and videos were also offered. Currently (May 2013) around 120,000 apps are available, around 75% of which are chargeable.

functionality

You have to register a user account (Blackberry ID) to download . Payment can be made via PayPal , credit card and the telephone bill. In contrast to other smartphone ecosystems, it is possible to obtain apps outside of the store. Only with the latest version 3.1 is it possible to access the store via WLAN . A new feature is that you can buy an app and then give it to friends as a gift.

growth

The store was announced on October 21, 2008 at the Blackberry Developers Conference and went online on April 1, 2009.

In his keynote at the DevCon Europe developer conference on February 7, 2012, the then Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins announced the following figures:

  • 2 billion downloads by January 2012
  • Payment in 26 currencies
  • 120,000 apps available since May 2013
  • 6 million downloads daily on average
  • represented in 164 markets
  • Purchase via telephone bill from 40 cellular phone providers

About 20% of the available apps are ported Android programs that run in an emulator .

criticism

In 2013 it was criticized that of the approximately 120,000 apps available at the time, more than 47,000 (39%) came from a single company based in Hong Kong, mostly with only limited use, sometimes without use. This app spam sometimes blocks the view of the really good apps.
