Triphan

Triphan

Triphan is a light yellow, translucent variety of the mineral spodumene .

The French mineralogist René-Just Haüy wanted to give Spodumene what he believed to be a better name in 1801. This comes from the Greek and means “three aspects”. Spodumene has a pronounced pleochroism and shows different colors from different angles. The name Triphan was used as a synonym for spodumene in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in French literature. At the end of the 20th century, the colorless, greyish, and yellowish varieties of spodumene began to be called "triphan" in the United States . In contrast to the other spodumene varieties, hiddenite and kunzite , triphane is rarely used as a gemstone ; suitable crystals have been found in Afghanistan , Brazil , California ( USA ) and Madagascar , among others .
