The HTC HD7 (also known as HTC Schubert, HTC HD3) is a smartphone from the Taiwanese manufacturer HTC Corporation . It uses the Windows Phone 7 operating system.

Background and development

The HTC HD7 is one of the first available smartphones to use Microsoft's latest mobile operating system Windows Phone 7. In order to achieve guaranteed quality (similar to the Apple iPhone ), Microsoft set strict (minimum) requirements for the device manufacturers, which in some areas leads to severe restrictions and makes it more difficult to create a unique selling point . The first HD model from the manufacturer HTC (where HD is the abbreviation for "High Definition", ie high-resolution), the HTC Touch HD , shone with an unprecedented high display resolution. For Windows Phone 7 devices, WVGA (480 × 800 pixels) is a fixed specification, which reduces the actual meaning behind the device name to absurdity . HTC's very popular further development of the user interface, HTC Sense , can no longer be used in the same way as it is with Windows Mobile and Android .

Launches and sales

The HTC HD7 has been officially available in Europe since October 21, 2010. In addition to free trade, the smartphone is also offered in cooperation with various cell phone companies.

Germany

In Germany, the HTC HD7 is available exclusively from the provider O2.

In contrast to the European standard, the version offered by O2 has 16 GB instead of just 8 GB of memory.

O2 announced that the HD7 was completely sold out after the first week.

Austria

As a partner for the distribution of the HD7, HTC was able to win the mobile communications company A1 and its competitor 3 in Austria .

Switzerland

In Switzerland, each of the three major mobile phone companies was awarded one of the three HTC WP7 smartphones that have been approved for the European area. Here was Sunrise Communications the contract for the HTC HD7; Orange will sell the HTC 7 Mozart and Swisscom the HTC 7 Trophy in the future .

technology

Chipset

A Snapdragon chipset of the type QSD8250, which was already installed in the predecessor HTC HD2, is used as the hardware basis . The 1 GHz processor core called Scorpion is comparable to the ARM Cortex-A8 core and is supported by 576 MB of RAM . The Adreno 200 chip from Qualcomm , which is permanently installed on the board and which, among other things, masters the OpenGL-ES-2.0 and Direct3D standards, takes over graphic calculations .
The QSD8250 chipset represents the first generation of the Snapdragon product line and supports several cellular standards, including GPRS , EDGE , UMTS and HSPA .
In addition, all Snapdragon chipsets contain processing units for decoding HDTV with a resolution of 720p and a GPS receiver.

Display

The HD7 has a 4.3 inch (10.9 cm) capacitive multi-touch screen, which has a resolution of 480 × 800 pixels ( WVGA ) and displays a color depth of 24 bits (after the HTC update only 16 bits) capable of around 16.78 million colors ( true color ).

Storage

In contrast to other models, such as the Samsung Omnia 7 , the HTC HD7 does not have a soldered NAND memory , but an internal, not freely accessible SD card slot. Depending on the version, there is an 8 or 16 GB SDHC memory card of speed class Class 4 from the manufacturer SanDisk in the card slot . The internal ROM memory with a capacity of 512 MB is combined with the SD card in a JBOD network to form a memory; Within the operating system, it is no longer possible to differentiate between ROM and SD card.

camera

The integrated camera can take photos with a resolution of up to 5 megapixels (2,560 × 1,920 pixels). An active pixel sensor (also known as a "CMOS sensor") is used to measure light . The camera is supported by a dual LED flash. The camera can also record films with a resolution of up to 720p (1280 × 720 pixels). Various recording programs are also available to the user, including candlelight , landscape and portrait .

Radio links

The HD7 communicates wirelessly via the WLAN standard 802.11 b / g / n , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS , HSPA and Bluetooth 2.1. An A-GPS antenna is also installed.
The Bluetooth profiles A2DP , AVRCP , HFP, HSP and PBAP are supported.

Radio standard Data rate (gross) frequency
WLAN IEEE 802.11 b 11 Mbit / s 2.4 GHz
WLAN IEEE 802.11 g 54 Mbit / s 2.4 GHz
WLAN IEEE 802.11 n 600 Mbit / s 2.4 GHz
HSDPA 7.2 Mbit / s 900/2100 MHz
HSUPA 2.0 Mbit / s 900/2100 MHz
GPRS 114 kbit / s 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
EDGE 560 kbit / s 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Bluetooth 2.1 2.1 Mbit / s 2402-2480 MHz

Sensors

A G-sensor , a digital compass , a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor serve as sensors .

measures and weight

The dimensions of the smartphone are 122 × 68 × 11.2 mm (H × W × D), with a weight of 162 grams (with battery).

accumulator

The lithium-ion battery has a nominal capacity of 1230 mAh.

HTC states a battery life in the GSM network of around 380 minutes of talk or 310 hours (corresponds to just under 13 days) in standby .

Specialty

As a special feature, the HD7 has been given a so-called "kickstand", which means that the device can be positioned upright on a tabletop for media enjoyment.

In addition to the HTC HD7, only the HTC 7 Surround, which is not currently available in Europe, has such a stand.

Difference to Mozart, Trophy and Co.

The HTC 7 Trophy and HTC 7 Mozart models , which were also officially presented on October 11, 2010, belong to the same generation of HTC releases for Microsoft Windows Phone 7 as the HTC HD7. It is still unclear whether the HTC 7 Surround model will appear in DA-CH or generally in Europe. The only device of the first generation of Windows Phones with a hardware keyboard, the HTC 7 Pro , was announced by the provider O2 for January 2011 for the German market.

Since the launch devices from HTC for Windows Phone 7 all have the same hardware basis, the differences can sometimes only be found in the details.

Modifications

Expansion of the internal memory

Just a few days after the official release of the HTC HD7, the first reports were published describing how the internal memory can be expanded by replacing the SDHC card . For this purpose, Torx screws must be loosened in several places below the battery compartment in order to access the card slot. However, if the card, which can have a maximum capacity of 32 GB, is exchanged, the operating system becomes unusable due to the separation of the JBOD network from ROM and SD card and must be completely reset using a hard reset; all personal data will be deleted.

In addition, according to several reports within the online community XDA Developers , not all SDHC cards work. While cards from the manufacturer SanDisk , which are also installed by HTC as standard, seem to work without any problems, the tested 32 GB versions from Kingston turned out to be unusable.

Another problem is the fact that the SD card that has now been removed, due to an unknown formatting, cannot easily be used apart from a Windows Phone 7 smartphone, for example on a computer or in a digital camera. Currently, only a workaround using a Symbian smartphone can help .

A video was published on the video platform YouTube which shows the change of the SD card in detail without the guarantee being lost.

Modifications in the software area are also possible, the so-called custom ROMs, which originated from the XDA developers, but are now also available in German Windows Phone forums.

Criticism from the community

Before announcing the performance data

Before the official announcement by HTC, there was a lot of speculation about the possible performance data of the HD7, which raised the bar of expectations among interested parties very high. This is particularly because the "HD" models from HTC were always considered the flagships of their own portfolio until then. The rumors predicted the HD7 (at that time still called "HD3") a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 800 × 1280 pixels and a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon chipset. In addition to the ability to play Full HD films (1080p) , the HD7 should already have implemented the latest 4G standard LTE . HTC never commented on or confirmed such rumors.

Reactions from the community

The number of those who were disappointed when the first effective marginal data for the device was published was correspondingly high. Especially the fact that the device hardly differed from its predecessor, the one-year-old HTC HD2 , caused great frustration.

Choice of Snapdragon chipset

The choice of the built-in Snapdragon chipset was met with great misunderstanding - with the QSD8250, the first and therefore oldest generation was chosen, whereas HTC already installed the second generation (MSM8255) in the Android segment in devices such as the HTC Desire HD . By shrinking from 65 nm to 45 nm, the newer chipsets not only increased performance, but also reduced energy consumption. In addition, the production costs decreased, since more dies can be manufactured per wafer .

Another disadvantage of using the older Snapdragon chipset is the built-in GPU. While the first generation was still equipped with an Adreno 200 GPU, the much more powerful Adreno 205 does its job in the second generation. In a run of the " 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0 " benchmarks from Rightware (formerly from Futuremark), the Adreno 205 GPU was awarded around four times higher performance values than its predecessor, the Adreno 200.

Internal memory capacity

For many, however, the absolute no-go was the fact that HTC only equipped a device that was designed for media use with only 8 GB of memory. Many find this astonishing because the device does not have a freely accessible memory card slot, so the memory cannot be expanded without modification (see also: Expanding the internal memory ) . Some mobile phone providers, such as the German provider O2, counteract this with a special version with 16 GB of built-in memory.
