SanDisk Corporation (SD) is a multinational corporation headquartered in Milpitas , California and until May 30, 2006 was based in Sunnyvale , California. It mainly deals with development and production of flash - memory cards . The company has been largely fabless since 2009 .
history
The company was founded in 1988 by Eli Harari , Jack Yuan and Sanjay Mehrotra under the name SunDisk and was listed in the NASDAQ under the new name SanDisk from November 1995 . According to its own information, the company is the world's largest supplier of flash memories , with sales of around 3.3 billion US dollars in 2006 and around 3.9 billion US dollars in 2007 . SanDisk employs more than 3000 people worldwide, the patent pool comprises over 860 US patents and 550 in other countries.
In 2006, SanDisk took over competitor M-Systems .
In October 2015, SanDisk put itself up for sale. After Micron Technology initially expressed its interest, Western Digital announced in October 2015 its intention to buy SanDisk for $ 19 billion in shares and cash. After the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China approved the acquisition, SanDisk was acquired by Western Digital Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Western Digital Corporation, on May 12, 2016. Since then, SanDisk has been consolidated in Western Digital's consolidated financial statements .
Products
SanDisk mainly produces storage media based on flash memory. Other products include memory card readers, MP3 players and accessories for their own products.

MP3 player
The series of MP3 players from SanDisk is called Sansa. These devices are based on the iPods of the competitor Apple , but they are characterized by radio reception, microSD expandability and FLAC / Ogg Vorbis support. SanDisk provided earlier players with a proprietary device interface for accessories, such as docking stations, external hi-fi systems and the like. The current models (Sansa Clip Zip and Fuze +) have a standard micro-USB port.
