Milpitas is a city in Santa Clara County in California , United States , with 66,790 inhabitants (2010). The city lies north of San José and south of Fremont and is therefore in the catchment area of the metropolis of San Francisco . As of the 2000 census, about 52 percent of the population were Asian. The geographical coordinates are: 37.43 ° north, 121.89 ° west. The urban area has a size of 35.3 km².
The city's name, Milpitas, is derived from the plural diminutive of the Mexican word milpa , which means garden in which maize grows .
One of the few attractions in Milpitas is the Jose Maria Alviso Adobe , built in 1837 . The listed building is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the greater San Francisco area. Despite being remodeled in 1853, it is one of the most outstanding examples of the Monterey Colonial style that prevailed in California from around 1830 to 1860.
