Adaptec is a former hardware manufacturer that was founded in Milpitas , California , in 1981 and today, after a number of company names, operates under the name Steel Partners as an investment company. The Adaptec brand is still used by its current owner, Microchip Technology , for adapter cards and other IT accessories. The original company Adaptec developed and manufactured chips, internal host bus adapters, RAID controllers, external storage area networks (SAN), ethernet-based iSCSI- SAN (IP SAN), network attached storage (NAS) and the associated software .
history
Adaptec was founded in Milpitas , California in 1981 by Larry Boucher and other former Shugart Associates engineers . The group was entrusted with the development of the "Shugart Associates System Interface" (SASI) at Shugart, which was later renamed "Small Computer System Interface" (SCSI).
The company became known for its SCSI adapters. In the 1990s, Adaptec took over competitors Trantor and Future Domain . The well-known network equipment supplier Cogent was also bought out in the period that followed. In May 2010 the business area with RAID cards was sold to PMC-Sierra . This company has since been renamed Microsemi and was taken over by Microchip Technology ( Chandler / Arizona / USA) in mid-2018 , but still provides the drivers and software for the earlier Adaptec products on its website.
Products
The company mainly manufactured interface adapters for storage devices in computers. The product range included adapters for USB , FireWire , SCSI , iSCSI , FibreChannel , Serial ATA , Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), audio / video and additional small parts such as USB hubs were also produced in-house.
Adaptec's Easy CD Creator is (now obsolete) CD / DVD burning software that shipped with many early CD burners. This software was later supplied by Roxio .
