Roxio
Roxio is a software provider that develops solutions for capturing, processing and archiving digital media for the consumer market. Headquartered the company has in Santa Clara and Los Angeles ( California ). The European headquarters are in Milton Keynes near London .
Company profile and history
The company was founded in September 2000 as a result of the spin-off of the software division from Adaptec (a manufacturer of adapter solutions based in Milpitas , California ). In May 2001, Roxio became a public company.
With the acquisition of MGI Software and remnants of Napster in 2002 and the takeover of Pressplay in May 2003, Roxio made an early investment in the legal music download market. The aim was to increase sales of Roxio's CD and DVD products by offering more digital music online . Despite its extremely successful software solutions for the consumer market, Roxio then recorded heavy losses and its stock market value fell rapidly. As a result, Roxio's software division was sold to Sonic Solutions in 2004 and the online music division was spun off and listed on the stock exchange under the name Napster, Inc. Up to this point, Sonic Solutions was a leading developer of professional DVD authoring systems ( Sonic Scenarist and Sonic DVD Producer ).
For Roxio, the takeover meant the end of four years of independence, but at the same time it also meant rescue from financial misery.
In mid-January 2012, Corel Corporation announced that it would take over all Roxio programs and the company behind them from Rovi Corporation .
Today Roxio has more than 500 employees worldwide.

criticism
WinOnCD ≤ 3.8 and Windows XP
WinOnCD was originally a product from CeQuadrat, which was sold to the software division of Adaptec (later Roxio) in 1999. The first version that comes from Roxio was WinOnCD 3.8 from the year 2000. When Windows XP was released in 2001, a patch for WinOnCD 3.8 was necessary because an incompatibility of WinOnCD version ≤ 3.8 made the Windows operating system unusable after the installation .
However, when the new version WinOnCD 5 appeared in 2001, the option to download this bugfix for WinOnCD 3.8 disappeared . This fact met with a lot of criticism from customers , especially in view of the fact that many CD and DVD burners were sold with an OEM version of WinOnCD 3.8 during this period . Because if a customer had bought such a burner and then wanted to switch to Windows XP, it would make the new Windows XP operating system almost unusable without the patch, which was no longer available.
The assumption is that Roxio no longer offered the patch in order to stimulate sales of the new version WinOnCD 5, since one of the advertised innovations was also the Windows XP compatibility.
Meanwhile, there was good news for those affected: from the end of 2005 to the end of 2008 Roxio offered free licenses for WinOnCD 6 Power Edition .
