Corel Corporation [ kəˈrel ˌkɔː pə ˈreɪʃ n ], German mostly [ ˈkɔʁəl - ] is a Canadian technology group and software manufacturer. The company is based in Ottawa , Ontario , Canada . Corel has acquired numerous companies and products in its corporate history. The range now includes solutions for graphics, photo, video, office communication and virtualization.

Company history

The company was founded in 1985 by Michael Cowpland. His intention was to set up a research laboratory. "Corel" is the abbreviation for "COwpland REsearch Laboratory". With the CorelDRAW and WordPerfect products , Corel Corporation briefly became Canada's largest software manufacturer . It made Corel's early investors very wealthy, but that strength didn't last long for Corel. The attempt to compete with Microsoft Word through WordPerfect failed. Corel had to lay off many employees and Michael Cowpland was suspected of insider trading on the stock exchange . Michael Cowpland left Corel in August 2000 and a new director named Derek Burney tried, with the help of McKinsey & Company, to get Corel back on track by focusing on core competencies .

In October 2000, Corel announced a strategic alliance with Microsoft that included a $ 135 million investment by Microsoft. In 2001, Corel took over Micrografx , a former competitor in the field of image processing. On September 2, 2003, Corel was taken over by the Vector Capital Group. Then Corel disappeared from the NASDAQ stock exchange and became a private company.

In 2006 Corel bought the software manufacturer WinZip and InterVideo , which in turn was about to take over Ulead . In April of the same year Corel came back on the stock exchange. Following the IPO, the private equity company Vector Capital still held 72 percent of the shares.

In late October 2009, Vector Capital made an offer to purchase all of the outstanding shares in Corel Corp. at a price of US $ 4.00 in cash. At this point in time, Vector Capital held 67% of the share capital. At the end of November 2009, Corel Corp. as a result of the Offering, was almost entirely owned by Vector Capital-controlled Corel Holdings for an amount of $ 34.7 million. Corel Corp. before another stock market pullback .

In mid-January 2012, Corel announced that it would acquire its subsidiary Roxio and all products of the same name from Rovi Corporation .

On July 2, 2012, Corel acquired Avid's line of video editing products for home use. Corel took over Pinnacle Studio , Avid Studio and Avid Studio for iPad and the associated development team.

On December 20, 2018, Corel took over the US company Parallels and with it its virtualization solution Parallels Desktop .

On July 3, 2019, financial investment firm KKR acquired Corel from Vector Capital for over $ 1 billion.

Product history

The company made a name for itself mainly with the programs CorelDRAW and WordPerfect , which should represent alternatives to the widely used programs from Adobe and Microsoft . Corel Painter and Corel Photo-Paint software, manufactured by Corel, provide an alternative to Adobe Photoshop for digital artists and web designers . The product Corel PaintShop Pro has been added , originally from Jasc Software , which Corel acquired in October 2004 . It is suitable for image processing , but the range of functions does not come close to the market leader Adobe Photoshop. For the creation of technical drawings , Corel offered Corel Designer , which was originally developed by Micrografx . The Corel Ventura product , which was marketed by Xerox as Ventura Publisher at the time , was somewhat hidden . Corel Ventura was an alternative to e.g. B. FrameMaker .

At the end of 1999 Corel Linux was released, which is based on Debian . Another version followed , then the distribution was discontinued and shortly afterwards Xandros bought it up.

With the acquisitions in 2006 (Winzip, Intervideo and Ulead), Corel Corporation expanded its product portfolio to include the packaging program (compression program) WinZip as well as DVD video players, burning programs, video and graphics processing software.

Corel also sells software with very questionable uses through its subsidiary WinZip. Products such as "WinZip Malware Protector", "WinZip Driver Updater" and "WinZip Registry Optimizer" usually get onto the computer undesirably and then try to steal the manufacturer by deceiving the user. Malwarebytes Inc. has therefore identified the WinZip Malware Protector as a "fake computer cleaner".
