Parallels Desktop for Mac (formerly Parallels Workstation for Mac OS X ) is virtualization software for Mac OS X on Intel processors from Parallels .

overview

As the host operating system is Mac OS X supported as guest operating systems is a variety of 32-bit operating systems, Version 6 and 64-bit x86 support (eg Windows, Linux, * BSD, OS / 2, Solaris / 86 or Mac OS X Lion). As of version 7, support for Mac OS X Lion (Lion) was also integrated as a guest operating system for the first time. It can u. a. can be restored directly from a Recovery HD partition and requires OS X Lion as the host OS. If the user has Windows installed in a Boot Camp partition, it can run directly in Parallels' virtual machine . Physically separate Windows installations can also be transported in their own image format in order to then run this in a virtual machine.

Emulated environment

The emulated environment offers u. a.

  • a VESA 3.0 compatible graphics card (configurable up to 1024 MB VRAM),
  • an Intel i815 compatible chipset,
  • USB 3.0 support (including iSight HD support),
  • an AC97 -compatible sound card
  • and a Realtek-compatible (RTL8029 (AS)) network card.

In addition, CDs and DVDs can be burned in the VM by directly accessing the hardware of the host system.

Parallels also has a coherence mode (called Unity mode in VMWare and seamless mode in VirtualBox ), which ensures that the guest desktop is hidden and the guest applications appear in the Mac environment. This allows guest programs to be started from the Mac OS X dock.

Data can be exchanged between a Mac OS X host and a Windows guest via drag and drop without using explicit shares.
