Sonic Solutions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sonic Solutions was a software company headquartered in Novato, California until it was acquired by Rovi Corporation in 2010 . In addition to offices in the United States, the company also had offices in Europe and Asia .

history

Sonic Solutions was founded by former Lucasfilm employees who developed the SoundDroid audio editing system as part of the Droidworks project (another well-known spin-off from the project is Pixar ).

Sonic developed and marketed The Sonic System, a professional, non-linear digital audio workstation for music editing, restoration, and CD preparation.

Sonic received an Emmy Award in 1996 for technical achievements . In the same year, the company worked with various Hollywood studios and consumer electronics manufacturers to introduce the first commercial DVD production system. Sonic expanded its business model to include corporate software divisions with DVD authoring systems intended for professional use (Sonic Scenarist and Sonic DVD Producer) as well as retail and OEM DVD software applications for private use (DVDit, MyDVD and RecordNow).

In 2002 Sonic spun off the entire audio division into Sonic Studio , LLC, in order to concentrate solely on the DVD market, company software and the licensing of IP and source code. Well-known customers of the company include Microsoft, Apple, Google, Adobe and Avid. The middleware and embedded chips were used by Texas Instruments, Broadcom, Scientific Atlanta / Cisco, Marvel and Intel, among others.

Sonic expanded into end-user software (image, audio and video editing) in 2000, selling approximately 50 million copies per year on the internet and over 15,000 retail stores including Apple Store, Walmart, Costco, Best Buy, Target, Dixon's and MediaMart. In its sector, Sonic had a market share of 64%.

Since going public, IPO has generated over $ 1.5 billion in sales, making it one of the fastest growing digital media companies for a variety of reasons, according to Forbes, Fortune and Business Week.

In 2005 Sonic began migrating its end-user software business to the SAAS model.

By 2010, Sonic was one of the largest providers of pay-for-movies on the Internet and CE devices, in partnership with major film studios. Sonic held the rights to the films and provided cloud access as a white product provider.

Acquisitions

The acquisitions of the Sonics group include the desktop and mobile division (DMD) of VERITAS Software Corporation in 2002, Roxio in 2003 (end-user software for Windows and Mac OS), Simple Star (creation of Internet slideshows) and CinemaNow in 2008 (delivery of digital films).

In October 2010, DivX Inc. acquired DivX Inc. for a $ 326 million deal to expand into the online video market.

sale

On December 23, Rovi Corporation announced its intention to buy the company for $ 720 million. The acquisition was a nearly $ 1 billion securities deal. According to a February 2011 article in Business Insider , Sonic generated the highest return on any public company on the NYSE or NASDAQ. The acquisition was completed in March 2011.
