Quantum is an international provider of specialized solutions for data backup and archiving as well as for scale-out storage. The company, which is headquartered in San José , USA, offers technology that ensures the intelligent acquisition, sharing of data and their management in complex digital environments and workflows.

Company history

Since it was founded in 1980, Quantum has supported companies in matters of data backup , management and retention.

Quantum originally developed and produced hard drives . The ATLAS series was one of the world's fastest SCSI hard drives around 1999 , and Quantum was the second largest hard drive manufacturer in the world at that time. Gradually, through acquisitions and developments, Quantum expanded its portfolio to include additional data storage solutions ( tape drives , tape libraries ) and disk backup systems.

Entry into the DLT - tape technology took Quantum in 1994 by buying the "Disc and Tape Division" of the Digital Equipment Corporation . The takeover of ATL Products, a manufacturer of DLT libraries for up to 300 media, in 1998 and of Benchmark Storage Innovations, a magnetic tape manufacturer with licenses for products from the DLT-Value series, in 2002 confirmed this strategic expansion.

In October 2000, Quantum sold the hard drive division Quantum HDD including the right to use the Quantum brand for hard drives to Maxtor .

With the purchase of Seagate Advanced -Ausgliederung Certance Quantum in 2004 its offer to the LTO - band technology as an alternative to the in-house DLT drives.

In 2006, Quantum acquired the Advanced Digital Information Corporation (ADIC), a manufacturer specializing in enterprise tape libraries, in order to enter the high-end business. Through its merger with ADIC, Quantum also acquired patent 5,990,810 (the “810 patent”) for deduplication based on variable-length data blocks and shipped its first DXi series of disk-based backup and deduplication solutions in early 2007 . In 2011, the US Patent and Trademark Office ( USPTO ) re-confirmed the validity of the patent following legal disputes as part of a review.

Jon Gacek has held the position of CEO at Quantum since 2011. In one of his first official acts, the company Pancetera was taken over, thereby expanding the focus from physical to virtual environments, including cloud- based solutions.

Today Quantum is active in the areas of backup, recovery and archiving of data in physical, virtual or cloud environments. The company also offers solutions that combine disk , tape , deduplication, replication , encryption , the backup of virtualized data and software for data management . Data management solutions in the big data environment are also part of the Quantum portfolio and are primarily aimed at customers from the media and entertainment , healthcare and life sciences , science and technology, education, finance and public sectors .

In the past fiscal year (ended March 31, 2016), Quantum had total sales of $ 476 million. The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol QTM .

In addition to its headquarters in San José , Quantum has numerous offices in North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The German branch Quantum GmbH is located in Munich . Quantum has been a member of the Active Archive Alliance since April 2013. The joint industry association informs end users in companies about new technologies that enable reliable and efficient online access to archived data.

Products and solutions

In addition to disk-based deduplication and replication systems for backup and restores , the Quantum portfolio includes solutions for backing up data on virtual machines (VM), appliances for cloud-based data backup and solutions for disaster recovery and long-term storage of company data . The offer also includes: Scale-out storage solutions for file sharing and archiving , including disk archives for data storage with object storage, as well as tape libraries .

Disk backup systems

The disk-based backup solutions of the DXi series offer functions such as deduplication, virtual tape , snapshots, disaster recovery and replication. The integrated and patented deduplication technology reduces the storage requirement on the hard disk by up to 90 percent, depending on the infrastructure. The DXi4000 is the first appliance with capacity-on-demand deduplication, which means that licenses for the use of additional disk storage can be subsequently activated if required. It is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized companies with decentralized locations. The DXi6000 appliances are designed for complex backup problems in midrange and enterprise data centers . The DXi6701 / 02 is the most successful Branded Systems product launch in the company's history to date. It offers easy-to-implement deduplication for replication for NAS and FC environments. The expandable appliances of the DXi6900 series support all midrange and enterprise setup options: NAS, VTL and OST. With the DXi8500, disk, tape and replication processes in enterprise companies with multiple locations can be centrally managed. The portfolio is rounded off by the virtual appliances of the DXi V series: The DXi V1000 and DXi V4000 offer the entire range of functions of the DXi deduplication appliances in a completely VM-based software and enable the backup of virtualized environments and private clouds.

The Info-Tech Research Group positioned Quantum as a “champion” in the Disk Backup Vendor Landscape Report 2013 for the extensive functionality of the DXi deduplication appliances.

Virtual machine backup

Together with the DXi appliances and the existing backup applications, the vmPRO software enables the integration of VM backup and recovery into the existing data backup processes. According to the manufacturer, it is the only VM backup solution in the industry that backs up data in its native format. The vmPRO 4000 solution combines backup software and integrated data storage with deduplication and filters unassigned, expired and inactive data from the virtual machines (VMs). This reduces the overhead on servers , networks and storage.

Cloud backup

The Quantum Q-Cloud consists of cloud-based services as well as hardware and software. The range of services enables the replication and management of backup data from physical and virtual servers in a central cloud as Backup as a Service (BaaS). Dedicated equipment or software licenses are no longer required for customers to replicate data to the remote Q Cloud platform environment. The Quantum Q-Cloud is based on vmPRO technology and the virtual deduplication appliance DXi V1000. With this purely software-based solution, data can be backed up in public, private and hybrid cloud environments.

Scale-out storage and archiving

According to the manufacturer, the solutions of the StorNext product family are designed for data-intensive industries such as media and entertainment or life sciences.

The StorNext product family includes the StorNext Metadata Appliances for file sharing , central control and administration, StorNext AEL Archives for nearline storage such as offline archiving of data, StorNext Q-Series disk systems as primary high-speed storage and StorNext G3000 Gateway Appliances for virtual access to shared data pools and configuration of on-demand provisioning of clients via Ethernet . In March 2014, Quantum introduced the new StorNext Pro storage solutions.

The central element of the product family is the StorNext 5 storage management platform. The software offers fast data exchange and access as well as their storage.

Object storage

The Lattus Object Storage systems can be scaled to hundreds of PB using a flat object namespace. Configurable redundancy algorithms ensure immediate data access across multiple locations. With Lattus-X and Lattus-M there are two different versions of storage systems.

The StorNext solutions use TV stations such as CNN , Fox and BBC as well as production studios such as Framestore or Disney .

Tape libraries

The Scalar Tape Libraries (Scalar i6000 / Scalar i500 / Scalar i840 / Scalar i40) manage and secure business-critical data in medium-sized companies, workgroup and enterprise-level data center environments. The Superloader 3 line also has the option of remote replication. The Scalar i500 platform also serves as the basis for Quantum StorNext AEL500, which combines automated, rule-based tiering with tape for archiving big data .

NDX NAS and RDX disk solutions

The NDX-8 NAS appliance and the portable RDX disk drives are designed for use in smaller companies such as branch offices and can reduce storage requirements by up to 90 percent by integrating deduplication technology. The RDX is offered as a single drive as well as an 8-slot disk library (RDX 8000) with removable disk cartridges and is suitable for both backup and archiving. For offsite disaster recovery protection, the NDX can both replicate data to a second NDX appliance or transfer it off-site via an RDX 8000.

Standalone devices and media

  • LTO tape drives - LTO technology is a scalable and open tape format and can be used from midrange to enterprise level in server environments with growing data protection requirements.
  • DLT tape drives - DLT technology enables backup, recovery and archiving of business-critical data.
