Travan is a historic, on QIC -based technology magnetic tape system for backup ( Backup ) and archiving of computer data, primarily designed for workstations and small servers .

The first versions of Travan cartridges released in 1995 offered around 400 MB and 800 MB compressed. In the most powerful version, the TR-7 (also: Travan 40 ), 20 GB of data (uncompressed; with hardware compression switched on, an average of 40 GB) can be archived on a single plug-in module at a data transfer rate of up to 2 Mbytes / sec .

Travan technology has lagged behind other magnetic tape technologies such as DLT and AIT for various reasons:

  • The Travan version TR-7 offered only 20 GB capacity per cartridge, DDS -5 on the other hand 36 GB and AIT over 200 GB.
  • The open design of Travan drives and the type of recording (serpentine on parallel data tracks) lead to a loud operating noise.
  • Travan cartridges were formatted at the factory. If the formatting is destroyed (by strong magnetic fields, for example), the cartridge cannot be used.
  • Travan cartridges were about three times more expensive than DDS cartridges of similar capacity.
