Disk
Disk (American English for disk or platter) and Disc (British English, same meaning) have the same meanings but are used in different contexts. In IT, disk refers to magnetic rotating storage media or terms that refer to them, whereas disc refers to optical ones . It is assumed that the reason for this differentiation of the spellings is that the development of optical data carriers took place primarily in Europe and Asia, where British English is traditionally preferred. Nowadays the word endings are still primarily used for the various storage techniques, although they may be used interchangeably.
