An input pen ( technically English stylus or touch pen ) is a pen that is used to operate touch screens and graphics tablets . Screens specially prepared for input pens can be found in computers , cell phones and phablets , handheld consoles and PDAs .

The input pen consists of a plastic pen with a softer plastic core. The cover is hard and non-slip, the soft core ends in the tip and is designed to touch the screen as gently as possible (i.e. without the risk of scratching).

The input pen enables more precise operation than with the fingers, since only the thin tip touches the screen. This also prevents the screen from being soiled by fingerprints.

Depending on the device, pen pressure and pen tilt can be measured and recorded.

Conductive pens are required for devices with a capacitive touchscreen .
