Lumia name and model numbering
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said at Nokia World 2011 that “Lumia” means light . The Lumia models should represent the new sunrise for Nokia . Nokia wanted to re-enter the smartphone market with the Windows Phone models. The Finnish word Lumi means " snow ".
The numbering of the individual Microsoft Lumia models has been standardized with a three-digit number since 2015. The first digit of the numbering represents the device class (4XX… 9XX), the second digit the respective device generation. The third digit indicates the variations within a device class and generation. A "0" is the initial version and the "5" is usually a "minor upgrade". If the third digit is not a “0” or “5” or is followed by a letter, it is usually a region-specific device.
With the announcement of the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL and 950 XL in 2015, Microsoft ended the use of the four-digit (13XX, 15XX, 25XX) device classes for phablet and tablet models. Large-format screens are instead displayed by "XL" extensions in the respective device class. The four-digit numbering caused confusion, because it indicated a higher-class device, which was not given in many cases due to the specification or pricing.
