A Nokia Lumia 830 with Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile is an operating system for cell phones from the US company Microsoft . It is based on the same Windows NT - kernel as the in-house operating system Windows 10 and is the successor to Windows Phone 8.1 . Windows 10 Mobile was heavily based on its desktop counterpart.

The functional development was ended in 2017, security updates were made until January 14, 2020. Microsoft recommends switching to an Android or iOS device.

Settings menu

The settings menu is largely designed in the same way as Windows 10 (desktop). The settings menu is divided into categories, behind which there are various sub-categories with the various setting options. In addition, you can now search for a specific setting; there is a search bar above the category menu.

Continuum

Another innovation is Continuum , in which the smartphone, after being connected to an external monitor, is to be transformed into a desktop PC with an Office program package using a special adapter. However, this requires new equipment. For example, Continuum is B. available on the Lumia 950 and 950 XL models released in December 2015 and cannot be retrofitted on previous smartphones. The full use of the Office program package in Continuum mode requires a paid Office 365 subscription.

The Continuum feature is also used on tablets up to and including 8 inches that are shipped with Windows 10 Mobile. If you turn this into landscape format, the mobile design changes into a Continuum desktop.

Since Windows 10 Mobile works with ARM-based processors, normal Windows programs or x86 programs cannot run under Continuum.

Edge

Microsoft Edge contains the same innovations as Microsoft Edge in the desktop version, such as: B. the EdgeHTML engine instead of Trident in Internet Explorer and a read mode.

While Internet Explorer Mobile with the EdgeHTML engine was still included in Windows 10 Mobile in early betas, it was removed after Microsoft Edge with build 10136 was completed on June 16, 2015.

Tiles

Compared to Windows Phone 8, the number of tiles that can be displayed on the start screen has been increased. After activating the option “Show more tiles” in the display menu, six instead of four small and three instead of two medium-sized tiles can be arranged in a row. When setting a background image, the tiles are no longer transparent as in Windows Phone 8.1, but are semi-transparent and colored with an accent color determined from the background image. However, as with the predecessor, there are some apps that are not transparent. If you switch to the app list, this is also highlighted with the background image.

Store

The program for the Windows Store has been revised and on the start page contains an overview of app and music recommendations, (free) top apps and games, new music, new films and the best-selling TV programs . The user interface is identical in the desktop and mobile version, except that a hamburger menu icon with different categories and setting options appears in the upper left corner of the smartphone in portrait format .

Cortana

Cortana supports more commands on Windows 10 Mobile, e.g. For example, Uber taxis can be ordered, individual settings made and data synchronized. It has also been integrated into the redesigned map app and now supports additional languages. Cortana's music recognition was deactivated with the end of the music streaming service Groove Music on January 1, 2018.

File Explorer

In Windows 10 Mobile, a file explorer was introduced based on the model of Windows Explorer , with which the file system of the internal memory can be accessed. Among other things, it can be used to create subfolders and to copy and move files.

Others

Above the app list there is now an overview of the most recently installed apps. In addition, the phone, messaging and calculator apps have been redesigned. The Office apps are no longer an integral part of the operating system, but are pre-installed and can be installed in the store. In Windows Phone 8, Word, Excel and PowerPoint were still combined in one Office app, but they can now be run and installed independently. In addition, a newly designed Outlook app is pre-installed in Windows 10 instead of the old mail app. With Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft is using many apps, including a. in the Store and Photos app as well as in the file explorer, on so-called hamburger menus .

Windows 10 Mobile includes a new camera app based on the Lumia Camera app, which is limited to some Lumia models . The keyboard also contains a virtual trackpoint and a voice input option. The map app has been renewed and now contains complete turn-by-turn navigation based on HERE Maps as well as integration of the Cortana voice assistant.

The version numbers of the desktop and mobile versions have been aligned. New functions are no longer planned.

Apps

Apps (applications) for the previous versions Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 can for the most part also run under Windows 10 Mobile. The built-in store will prevent the download of incompatible apps and a corresponding message will be displayed. Microsoft also released a program for developers that was later named Windows Bridge , which enables applications programmed for iOS to be easily ported to Windows 10 Mobile.

In the third quarter of 2016, 974,400 units were sold worldwide, which corresponds to a market share of 0.3%. During the same period, 299.5 million Android devices and 45.5 million iOS devices were sold. User numbers ( usage share ) are unknown.

The system was designed for devices with an ARM processor . According to Microsoft, all devices with a screen size up to and including 8 inches should be delivered with this processor and therefore also with Windows 10 Mobile. Devices with a larger screen diagonal, on the other hand, should have an x86 processor and be delivered with the usual desktop version of Windows 10. This is a novelty because in Windows 8 times 7 inch devices with a conventional desktop version of the operating system were also brought onto the market.

There are currently many devices from different manufacturers with Windows 10 Mobile, all of which are available in the DA-CH region . On October 6, 2015, Microsoft presented the entry-level model Microsoft Lumia  550 as the first smartphones with Windows 10 Mobile . This was followed by the two top models Lumia 950 and a version with a larger display called Lumia 950 XL in December 2015 and the Microsoft Lumia 650 in February 2016. The official market launch of the devices was on November 28, 2015. It was criticized from the start that the devices were delivered with an unfinished version of Windows 10 Mobile and that there were a lot of bugs such as app crashes , too long loading times and jerky scrolling in the operating system. The fact that the development of Windows 10 Mobile was generally not yet finished was shown by the fact that it was still in the development phase and a finished version for older devices had not yet been published. As of December 15, 2015, Windows 10 Mobile had a market share of 8.8 percent among all Windows Phone versions. On August 2, 2016, the "Anniversary Update" for Windows 10 Mobile took place. On April 25, 2017, the "Creators Update" was published, which compared to the desktop counterpart contained only a few innovations. Shortly afterwards, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 Mobile should no longer be further developed with the same system kernel as Windows 10 . Windows 10 Mobile received the "Fall Creators Update" (version 1709), which however only contained a few new functions.

The TCL subsidiary Alcatel One Touch presented the Pixi 3, the first 8-inch tablet with Windows 10 Mobile, at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas .

Upgrade from Windows Phone 8 / 8.1

Some Lumia devices and devices from other manufacturers released with Windows Phone 8 / 8.1 receive a free upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile.

In order to check whether the device is authorized and to carry out the upgrade, the “UpdateAdvisor” app must be installed from the Windows Store.

On March 17th, 2016 Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 10 Mobile for the older devices Lumia 520, 521, 525, 526, 620, 625, 630, 720, 810, 820, 822, 920, 925, 928, 1020 and 1320 as well many Windows Phone 8 devices (exceptions are BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, and MCJ Madosma Q501) from third-party manufacturers, although initially all devices with at least 8 GB of internal memory were intended for an official upgrade. Microsoft justifies this with the poor user experience on these older devices. At the end of April 2017 it was announced that the "Creators" update is only officially supported for devices that were also shipped with Windows 10 Mobile and also the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, devices like the Lumia 1520 can still get it but no more official support from Microsoft. There are no plans for these devices to receive future updates, so Microsoft has ended support for all older Windows Phone devices that shipped with Windows Phone 8, with the exception of the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL.

Development cessation and end of support

On October 9, 2017, Microsoft's vice president for Windows division Joe Belfiore announced that Microsoft would no longer focus on developing new functions and hardware for Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft will continue to deliver bug fixes and security updates. Microsoft manager Brandon LeBlanc reiterated on Twitter in November 2017 that this announcement also affects the Windows Insider Program , which has not provided any new builds since the Fall Creators Update was released. In January 2018 he made it clear again that there will be no new versions of Windows 10 Mobile.

Each version of Windows 10 Mobile (1511, 1607, 1703, 1709) should be supported by Microsoft for a period of 26 months during which bug fixes and security updates should be released. Support for the last version 1709 should end on December 10, 2019. In January 2019, Microsoft confirmed the final end of support for December 10th. From this point onwards, no more bug fixes or security updates should be provided and no customer service should be offered. Microsoft officially recommends switching to iOS or Android.

After the planned end of support on December 10th, Microsoft extended support for the last version by one month to January 14th, 2020.

The creation of new device backups ended on March 10, 2020, photo uploads and the import of existing backups no later than twelve months after the end of support. The Office apps are supported until January 12, 2021.

According to official information from Microsoft, the following end of support applied to the individual versions:

version Name (code name) Publication date End of support
Older version; no longer supported: 1511 November Update (Threshold 2) November 8, 2015 January 9, 2018

For the Microsoft Lumia series cell phones produced by Microsoft, they were entitled to purchase new versions within two years of their publication, which were then supported according to the table above.

While support was still ongoing, since 2018 Microsoft has been increasingly accused of neglecting to fix known errors. For example, after the February update, it was no longer possible to open PDF documents in Microsoft's own Edge browser , while the standalone Microsoft Reader app for displaying PDF documents was discontinued in the same month . The error in the Edge browser remained unresolved for over four weeks. A preliminary version of the Photos app was also delivered in February 2018, which could not be used due to display errors and was withdrawn two weeks later. In November 2018, the mail and calendar app could not be used by some users for days, and known display errors in the Windows Store were not fixed and incompatible apps for Android were suggested to users . According to the trade press, this showed that Microsoft was no longer interested in smartphones.
