Groove Music (formerly Xbox Music , before that Zune ) was a music streaming service provided by Microsoft for Windows , Xbox 360 and Xbox One , as well as an app for iOS and Android . Access was free of charge until December 1, 2014 and was financed through advertising that could be switched off for a fee. From December 1, 2014, streaming music was generally chargeable. In addition to streaming, it was also possible to store music locally. The Groove Music streaming service was switched off on January 1, 2018.

development

In 2006, Microsoft launched in the wake of the launch of the Zune - MP3 player a marketplace could be bought on the music and downloaded. The pricing model was based here at the iTunes store from Apple , which until then the market leader in digital commerce with music was. The Zune Store was later integrated into the operating system of the Xbox 360 game console . Since November 2008, holders of a Zune Pass have been able to obtain ten pieces a month free of charge, which Microsoft wanted to use to counter the emerging streaming services. After the Zune was discontinued and shortly before the first computers with Windows 8 or Windows RT were sold, Microsoft launched Xbox Music , which completely replaced the Zune store as a direct successor. Compared to its predecessor, it was distinguished above all by the fact that Xbox Music allowed streaming of music and still made it possible to permanently purchase a piece. In total, more than 38 million titles were available on the platform, making Microsoft the largest repertoire of streaming services. As of December 1, 2014, the free streaming offer was no longer available on Xbox Music. Customers, on the other hand, had a free trial month for the Xbox Music Pass.

Microsoft that before the upcoming release of Windows 10 announced on July 7, 2015 Xbox Music in Groovemusic be renamed, would order the service in the future to Xbox brand distinguish better from.

On October 2, 2017, Microsoft announced that all online music services such as the online shop integrated into the Microsoft Store and the Groove Music Pass streaming service would be discontinued on December 31, 2017. Music purchased through Groove therefore had to be downloaded by the end of 2017. Since then a download is no longer possible. Music Pass subscribers who took out a subscription after December 31, 2017 were reimbursed pro rata. Only the streaming of the personal music collection from OneDrive and the playback of local media have remained as functionality in the app. For subscribers of the Music Pass, Microsoft offers to transfer data such as playlists and saved favorites to Spotify .

Availability

According to Microsoft, older operating systems, especially Windows 7 , should no longer be supported. In contrast, the manufacturer had announced that it would also port Groove Music to Apple iOS and Android ; the necessary Groove Music Apps appeared later in the respective stores. In July 2013, the barrier-related usability on certain systems was lifted; Groove Music could be accessed through the use of common web browsers.
