Microsoft Windows RT is an operating system from Microsoft for devices with an ARM architecture .

The system is a variant from the Windows range and was completed on August 1, 2012. It has a lot in common with Windows 8 in that they both use significant pieces of the same source code and are based on the same kernel . The operating system was only delivered together with devices and could not be purchased as a stand-alone product for end customers.

The sale of Windows RT -based tablets was discontinued due to very weak sales figures. The last device, the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet, was stopped by Microsoft in February 2015.

Device requirements

Microsoft has the following minimum requirements for Windows 8 Logo certified devices:

  • Accelerometer: 3-axis with a data frequency of at least 50 Hz
  • Screen: resolution of at least 1024 × 768 pixels
  • Firmware : UEFI
  • Graphics: Direct3D -10 compatible with WDDM -1.2 driver

  • Magnetometer (e.g. for compass )
  • Network: Wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.0 + LE
  • Storage: At least 10 gigabytes available after initial setup
  • Ambient light sensor: 1,000–30,000 lux (dynamic range 5,000–60,000 lux)
  • USB 2.0: At least one controller and one open interface

Touch- sensitive devices must have digitizers that support at least five points of contact.

Hardware switch

Tablet computers or convertible PCs must have four hardware switches:

Devices without a permanently installed keyboard must support the switch combination “Windows key + on / off switch” as an alternative to the key combination “Ctrl + Alt + Del” (“ clamp grip ”).

Update

The device must support updating the graphics card driver without rebooting.

Windows components such as BitLocker , Storage Spaces or Windows Media Player , as well as the ability to join a domain or manage the device in the Active Directory , are not supported. However, it is possible to manage Windows RT devices through Windows Intune .

Application Compatibility

In contrast to the on AMD - and Intel processors based 32-bit - and 64-bit version of the Windows 8 operating system can only Windows RT Windows Store - apps are installed and running. The WinAPI -based desktop programs such as the Editor or Internet Explorer , as well as Office 2013 RT , a package consisting of Word , Excel , PowerPoint and OneNote , are an exception to this . Availability

Microsoft launched the Surface tablet on October 26, 2012 and Asus also launched the VivoTab RT TF600T tablet in October 2012. Dell , Lenovo and Samsung released devices at the end of 2012. Due to the low demand, Samsung decided not to sell its device in the USA and in March 2013 sales in Germany were discontinued; Hewlett-Packard canceled plans for a Windows RT device. Asus announced in July 2013 that it would no longer build Windows RT devices due to a lack of demand and Lenovo gave up Windows RT. Dell stopped selling its tablet in September 2013. In the second quarter of 2013, 200,000 of a total of 45.1 million tablets sold were equipped with Windows RT.

The Lumia 2520 was presented on October 22, 2013 . and was available in Germany since April 10, 2014. Production stopped in February 2015.

On September 23, 2013, the second generation of the Surface RT tablet from Microsoft was presented. The device has been available since October 22, 2013. On January 29, 2015, Microsoft confirmed the end of production of the Surface 2. This was the last Windows RT device. That means the end of this Windows version.
