Microsoft Office 2013 (code name: Office 15 , under Windows RT: Office 2013 RT ) is an Office package from Microsoft from the Microsoft Office series and is the successor to Microsoft Office 2010 .

The IA-32 and the x64 version ( AMD64 and Intel 64 ) of Office 2013 is compatible with Windows 7 , Windows 8 and Windows 10 as well as the associated server operating systems 2008 R2 and 2012 . The version of Office 2013 known as Office 2013 RT is the first Office version for ARM processors and runs on Windows RT . The successor is Microsoft Office 2016 , which, unlike the 2013 version, is available for both Mac OS X and Windows .

Mainstream support ended on April 10, 2018. B. with security updates is expected to end on April 11, 2023.

history

Development began in 2010 while Microsoft finished work on Office 14 and released it as Microsoft Office 2010 .

A technical preview version of Office 2013 was released on January 30, 2012. A public beta appeared on July 16, 2012. On October 25, 2012, the Release to Manufacturer Version (RTM) of Office, Visio and Project 2013 was released for Technet customers to download. On January 29, 2013, the final version was released for everyone to buy.

Innovations

User interface and cloud computing

The surface was adapted to the appearance of Windows 8 and should therefore also be more suitable for touch screens . With the integration of Microsoft OneDrive it is possible to save all documents directly in the cloud . In addition, the files stored in the cloud are synchronized with a local storage location. This means that all documents are available to the user even without an Internet connection. In addition, the services Skype and Yammer were integrated into the Office programs. So-called app streaming makes it possible to stream the Office programs to a Windows PC via the Internet . The programs can then be used without installation on this computer.

Office 2013 RT

The ARM version, Office 2013 RT , is the first version of Office for Windows RT . This does not have the same range of functions as the IA-32 and the x64 version, for example it lacks the Access and Publisher applications. The use of ActiveX controls is also not possible. Outlook has also been part of Office 2013 RT since the release of Windows RT 8.1.

Mobile variant

Shortly after the Consumer Preview was published, Microsoft announced that it would publish a mobile version of the office package for Windows Phone . This should be more similar to the desktop version than in earlier versions and take over some functions, for example for reminders. By connecting both applications via the Office Cloud, it is possible to edit a document on the PC and continue it at the same point on the mobile device.

Extensions

In August 2012 it became known that Office 2013 can be expanded for the first time with so-called apps . These are small programs that complement the functionality of the Office applications, for B. display an address directly from Microsoft Outlook on Bing Maps . The Office apps are tied to a specific Microsoft account and are automatically synchronized when used on multiple devices, provided that they run Windows 8 or Windows RT at the same time as Office 2013.

Restriction of use

Compared to Office 2010, the EULA has been changed in some places. For example, there was a new clause upon delivery, according to which a version of Office 2013 installed once is bound to the computer used for activation. It was not intended to be taken to another computer or handed over / sold to another user. The regulation violated current case law in most European countries, in particular because there was no indication of such a restriction on use on the packaging. After user protests, this rule was lifted by Microsoft in March 2013. A transfer to another computer is now possible after previous deinstallation every 90 days, and earlier in the event of a hardware defect.
