Microsoft OneNote is software from Microsoft that uses the PC as a digital notepad.

On Windows, OneNote is only sold as a Windows 10 app ( UWP ) with limited functions and no longer as a full-fledged Win32 application in the Office package. Under macOS, the software is distributed together with the Office package or as a free download.

Microsoft advertised that with OneNote electronic notes can be organized and easily found. The OneNote “notepad” is organized into sections with subsections, each of which can contain multiple pages. With the OneNote 2003 version , the product came onto the market for the first time in November 2003. There were three service packs until OneNote 2007 was released in January 2007 . OneNote 2010 followed in July 2010 and OneNote 2013 in January 2013 . The current desktop version has been distributed since September 2015 as OneNote 2016 in connection with Microsoft Office ( MS Office 2016 , also in the subscription version Office 365 ) and as OneNote in a modified form with Windows 10 .

An Apple iOS app has been available from Microsoft since January 2011 via the App Store and since February 2012 an Android version has been available for free download via Google Play . OneNote has also been available for Mac OS X since March 17, 2014. This also enables the synchronization of notes on a Windows PC or a Mac and a smartphone with Windows Phone, Android or iOS-based devices via OneDrive accounts.

OneNote has been available free of charge on all platforms since mid-March 2014, with users of purchased Office versions getting additional functions.

From March 2020, when Office 365 or Office 2019 is installed, the OneNote desktop app will be installed along with the Word, PowerPoint and Excel desktop apps. A "standalone" version of the desktop version of OneNote is currently offered by Microsoft free of charge. The UWP app recommended as the successor now only supports notebooks in the cloud (like only OneDrive under macOS) and is optimized for tablets and pen use. OneNote will continue to be developed under macOS as before and will be included with Office 2019 for Mac.
