Onedrive , formerly Microsoft SkyDrive is a file hosting - service of Microsoft . The service started in the United States in 2007 under the name Windows Live Folders (code name SkyDrive ). The service has been operating under the name OneDrive since February 19, 2014 . The service makes it possible to upload files and edit or access them there - also from other access points.

Access is via a web browser , proprietary client applications or apps. The files can also be made available to other users. Since July 27, 2016, every user has 5 GB free of charge, previously it was 15 GB after several changes. Buyers of a Microsoft Office 365 version currently have 1 TB of storage available, and here too the storage volume has been subject to frequent changes in the past. The maximum size for individual files is 15 GB when using a current browser version or the OneDrive app; If you are using an older web browser, you can only upload files up to 300MB in size.

Software and apps

With the help of the OneDrive application offered by Microsoft, data can be uploaded to OneDrive (“ save in the cloud ”). To do this, a OneDrive folder is created on your own PC , and all files that are moved into this folder are automatically synchronized between the computer (PC or Mac ) and OneDrive.com . If files are added, changed or deleted in a storage location, they are automatically synchronized with them at the next online contact in all other (own) storage locations.

In addition to OneDrive for Windows and macOS , Microsoft also offers apps for Windows Phone , Android and iOS . With these you have mobile access to the synchronized files and the possibility to manage them and share them with others. Photos or videos you have taken can also be uploaded directly to OneDrive and shared with others.

An alternative to the applications mentioned is the SDExplorer program, which is available as freeware for Microsoft Windows . It also allows you to sync files and folders with OneDrive. The paid version SDExplorer Pro also offers the option of integrating OneDrive as an additional drive in the workplace. As an alternative for macOS, there is the Windows Live Mesh for Mac program .

Another way to access the OneDrive storage is that the online storage in Windows - or with third-party software and WebDrive on other platforms - can be integrated as a network drive via a WebDAV connection . However, WebDAV on Windows has stability problems.

OneDrive has been firmly integrated in Windows Explorer since Windows 8.1 . With current Linux and Windows operating systems it is possible to integrate OneDrive into the system as a network drive without special software .

languages

Since May 2008, the service has been available not only in English , but also in German and other languages.

Office Online

With the introduction of Microsoft Office 2010 , simplified web versions of Word , Excel , PowerPoint and OneNote , the so-called Office Web Apps , were added to the online offering , with which simple documents can be created and in some cases also edited from the browser. For example, presentations can be played online without a locally installed PowerPoint or notes can be added to OneNote documents. At the start of Office 2013 , these were revised again and received new functions. When OneDrive started, the web apps were renamed Office Online .

Name change from SkyDrive to OneDrive

Old Skydrive logo

BSkyB (now Sky Ltd. ) had a product called “Sky Store & Share” on offer in the period 2008–2011. BSkyB successfully sued Microsoft's SkyDrive product name for trademark infringement. The parties to the dispute agreed that Microsoft may temporarily continue to use the name SkyDrive for six months and, in return , waive an appeal . Accordingly, Microsoft has been using the name OneDrive since February 2014 .

Central search of files

Microsoft points out in the OneDrive Terms of Use that the data of its customers are automatically searched in order to find child pornography or other abuse.
In January 2015, a case became known in which, following a tip from Microsoft, the BKA investigated a user from Germany.

In 2020, there was an increasing number of unexpected bans on Microsoft accounts, suspected to be caused by an AI that arbitrarily detects "inappropriate" images.
