History and Development
Development began in 2006 while Microsoft was finishing up Office 12 and releasing it as Microsoft Office 2007. The version number 13 was omitted because of the aversion to the number 13 . It was speculated that Microsoft would release the successor to Office 2007 in 2009, but Steve Ballmer had officially announced that Office 2010 would be released in 2010. With the Microsoft Office 2010 Technology Guarantee, Office 2007 buyers receive a free upgrade license to Microsoft Office 2010 if they purchased Office 2007 between March 5 and September 30, 2010.
In addition, online versions of Microsoft Office, the so-called Office Web Apps, are made available free of charge. They can be called up via the browsers Internet Explorer , Mozilla Firefox , Google Chrome and Apple Safari , now also Opera (from version 10.60). The Microsoft Office Web Apps were released on June 7, 2010 and contain reduced versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. A Microsoft account is required to use it.
Office Starter 2010 was initially only preinstalled on new PCs and delivered free of charge. Since November 24, 2011 it has also been possible to download and install Office Starter 2010 free of charge. However, the installation was only possible on computers with Windows Vista or Windows 7 . It should replace Works with it. Office Starter 2010 contained reduced versions of Excel and Word, in which advertisements were displayed. In June 2012, Office Starter 2010 was finally discontinued in favor of the Office Web Apps, which also ended the free download option.
A Technical Preview version was tested internally at Microsoft on July 12, 2009, via the Microsoft Connect program and via selected companies. On November 18, 2009, the beta was made available to the public. Office 2010 Beta was a free, fully functional version. It expired on October 31, 2010.
On April 15, 2010, the final version ("Release to Manufacturing", RTM) was made available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Office 2010 has been available to corporate customers through the volume licensing programs since May 12, 2010. It has been available from specialist retailers as a boxed version since June 15, 2010. Microsoft released Office 2010 Service Pack 1 on June 28, 2011 . Service Pack 2 followed on July 21, 2013. Microsoft will end Extended Support (ie delivery of security updates) for Service Pack 2 on October 13, 2020.
