Life

As the son of the Swiss immigrant Fritz Hans Ballmer, Ballmer grew up in Detroit. He graduated from Harvard University in the 1970s , where he met Bill Gates . He graduated in 1977 with a magna cum laude BA in applied mathematics and economics. He then worked for Procter & Gamble for two years . He then began an MBA course at Stanford University , which he dropped when Bill Gates offered to work at Microsoft, despite winning two $ 10,000 prizes as the best freshman student.

On June 11, 1980, he became Microsoft's first manager. When Microsoft became a stock corporation in 1981, Ballmer held 8% of the capital based on a bonus agreement. In 1993, his shares were worth over a billion US dollars for the first time.

Over the years, Ballmer led several areas at Microsoft, including operating system development, sales and customer service, before becoming President (a post subordinate to the CEO) in 1998. On January 13, 2000, he succeeded Bill Gates as CEO - Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft. In retrospect, Ballmer described the Windows Vista operating system as his biggest flaw.

Steve Ballmer described Linux in 2001 as "a cancer that affects everything it touches in terms of intellectual property." He criticized the fact that open source software with the GNU General Public License is not compatible with your own software and that you also have to put it under the free license if you use parts of the open software, even if large parts of the company's own software are independent and independent Parts represented. Ballmer even interrupted his skiing vacation in Switzerland to personally ask the Mayor of Munich not to switch to GNU / Linux. However, his request was unsuccessful and the city of Munich switched from Windows to LiMux . At the end of November 2017, the city council decided to end the project and convert all computers to Windows by 2020.

On August 23, 2013 Microsoft announced in a press release that Steve Ballmer would retire as CEO of the company within twelve months. A committee including Bill Gates was looking for a successor until Satya Nadella (previously Executive Vice-President for Cloud Services) was appointed as the new CEO on February 4, 2014 . Ballmer then became a member of Microsoft's supervisory board , but left it again on August 19, 2014. On August 20, 2014, Ballmer left Microsoft at his own request.

On August 12, 2014, Ballmer bought the Los Angeles Clippers basketball club from Donald Sterling for two billion US dollars (around 1.49 billion euros).
