Donald T. Sterling (* 26. April 1934 in Chicago , Illinois as Donald Tokowitz ) is an American financial magnate and former owner of the basketball franchise Los Angeles Clippers (originally San Diego Clippers). His net worth is estimated at $ 3.5 billion.

Life

Sterling began his career as a lawyer in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he entered the real estate business and in 1981 bought the NBA club San Diego Clippers for $ 12 million. In 1984 the club moved to Los Angeles and was renamed the Los Angeles Clippers. In the 1980s, however, the team was hardly successful under Sterling's aegis. In 1992 the Clippers reached the playoffs for the first time . This success could be repeated in 1993.

Sterling made headlines around the world in 2014 due to racist statements. Sterling had told his ex-girlfriend at the end of April 2014 that she should no longer bring African-Americans to games of the Clippers and not publish photos of her with the exceptional player "Magic" Johnson on social networks. US President Obama described his remarks as "incredibly racially offensive". The Clippers players wore their warm-up jerseys turned inside out and black instead of white socks during the game in protest against their club boss at the next playoff game in Oakland. In addition, some franchise sponsors announced their withdrawal, including Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull . Sterling was banned for life by the NBA a few days after the phone recording was released and sentenced to a maximum fine of $ 2.5 million. In addition, the association's management urged him to sell the Clippers, whose value was estimated at around one billion US dollars. The 29 other NBA club owners, who have to officially approve the sale with a three-quarters majority, voted unanimously in advance.

On August 12, 2014, the previous Microsoft manager Steve Ballmer bought the shares in the franchise for two billion US dollars (around 1.49 billion euros). A California court dismissed Sterling's appeal against the sale.

Private

Sterling had been married to Rochelle "Shelly" Stein since 1955. The marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter. The couple separated in 2012. A week later, Sterling's son Scott died of a drug overdose at the age of 32.

In May 2014, it was announced that Sterling had cancer.
