Hans Günther Merk

Hans Günther Merk (born September 13, 1930 in Münchwald ) is a retired German civil servant. From 1992 to 1995 he was President of the Federal Statistical Office and in personal union with the tasks of the Federal Returning Officer.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1950, Merk studied law at the University of Mainz . In 1954 he passed the first and in 1958 the second state examination in law. He then worked as a lawyer and as a judge at the Koblenz District Court.

In 1959 he joined the administrative service of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), which remained his place of activity in various functions until his retirement. He was entrusted with the topics of sport and media, data processing in public administration and population issues. In the sports department of the ministry, he accompanied the preparation for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich .

At the beginning of June 1992 he was appointed head of the Federal Statistical Office as the successor to Egon Hölder . With that, the duties of the Federal Returning Officer fell to him. During his tenure, the European elections of June 12, 1994 , in which the citizens of the European Union were entitled to vote in their country of residence for the first time, and the federal election of October 16, 1994 were held. Upon reaching the statutory age limit, Merk retired at the beginning of October 1995.
