Georg Thiel

Georg Thiel (* 1957 in Cologne ) is a German lawyer. He has been the eleventh President of the Federal Statistical Office since October 16, 2017 and has been entrusted with the duties of the Federal Returning Officer.

Life

Thiel studied law in Cologne and, after completing his doctorate, joined the Federal Office for Civil Protection in 1988 , where he became head of department. Between 1997 and 2002 he took over the management of the “Organization and Information Technology” department and also headed various project groups in the Federal Ministry of the Interior . Then he was president of the technical relief organization .

Thiel moved back to the Federal Ministry of the Interior in 2006 and was there as a permanent representative of the department head “Administrative modernization; Administrative organization ", among other things, responsible for the areas of geographic information, statistics, procurement and the uniform telephone number for authorities.

From October 2015 to October 2017, Thiel was deputy head of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees . In October 2015 he was also appointed Vice President of the Federal Statistical Office and Deputy Federal Returning Officer. Since January 2017, he has also been the deputy of the Federal Commissioner for Refugee Management.

On October 16, 2017, he succeeded Dieter Sarreither as President of the Federal Statistical Office and at the same time became the new Federal Returning Officer.
