Hildegard Bartels
Hildegard Bartels (born December 23, 1914 in Duisburg ; † September 16, 2008 ) was a German civil servant and president of the Federal Statistical Office . She was the first woman in the Federal Republic of Germany to be entrusted with the management of a federal agency .
Life
Bartels was in 1944 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin to Dr. rer. pole. PhD. After brief employment in the Reich Ministry of Economics, she began her professional activity in the newly established Hessian State Statistical Office in 1946 . In 1948 she moved to the newly established Statistical Office of the United Economic Area , the forerunner of the Federal Statistical Office . In 1949 she took over the management of the department “General technical coordination, national accounts”; In 1967 she was appointed Vice President. From 1972 until her retirement in 1980 she was President of the Federal Statistical Office and Federal Returning Officer .
In 1960, under her leadership, the “system of accounts for national accounts for the Federal Republic of Germany” was developed. About 30 years later, the United Nations recommended introducing a corresponding concept internationally.
