Patrick Schmidt (born February 4, 1907 in Fécamp , France , † July 25, 1974 ) was a German civil servant and second president of the Federal Statistical Office . During his term of office, IT was introduced into the statistical offices .

Life

After Schmidt had graduated from high school , he first began specialist training at the Technical University in Berlin . He completed this training with a degree in business administration from the Berlin School of Management.

In 1946 he became acting head of the State Statistical Office in Bremen . He joined the Federal Statistical Office in 1950, but moved to the Federal Ministry of Transport seven years later . In 1964 he was appointed President of the Federal Statistical Office as the successor to Gerhard Fürst . His term of office lasted until 1972.

From the 1960s to the mid-1970s, it was no longer possible to press ahead with the expansion of staff as it had in previous years under Fürst, so that rationalization measures had to be taken in many places to make room for new tasks.

From 1962 the EDP found its way into the German statistical offices. In addition, the use of sampling procedures increased and contributed to the further rationalization of work processes. The targeted use and further development in IT created space for new tasks.

Thanks to this expanded range of tasks and technology, it was now possible to make important contributions to political and economic decision-makers. Schmidt is working towards the fact that the previously scattered legal bases were combined into collective laws for the corresponding areas. He also attached great importance to public relations, so that the necessity of statistics and their versatility could move even more into the focus of the public.

It is thanks to him that the users of statistics have got easier access to statistical material. The planning of a statistical database began in 1968 and was then implemented in 1978. This database was called "STATIS-BUND" and was only replaced by Genesis-Online after almost 30 years, in 2004 .
