GENESIS (statistics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GENESIS ( Joint New Statistical Information System ) is a metadata-supported database system for official statistics in Germany that was jointly developed by the State Statistical Offices and the Federal Statistical Office .

It is intended to replace the carrier systems of the databases existing in the statistical offices and thus place the data management software across Germany on a uniform platform. As a basis, Adabas is used for database management and Natural for the development of the core statistical processes; This not least because of the portability of this system software, which ensures that GENESIS can run on the various hardware and operating system platforms from the mainframe to the Unix server.

In addition to this technical harmonization, common content was defined for the databases of the statistical offices of the federal and state governments for 78 individual statistics, which are clearly identified using the EVAS system. The aim was and is the systematic and uniform representation of factual structures, but also the intertemporal comparability of time series members.

The GENESIS databases offer research access in the form of a keyword search or as a hierarchical search for subject areas / subject areas. There are also variably designed tables, i.e. In other words, characteristics can be selected and calls started for certain table positions. With the help of a preview function, the user can get an impression of the appearance and scope of the retrieval of a table. Results are not only displayed on the screen, but can also be saved in Excel , CSV or HTML formats . In addition, extensive background and additional information is available to the user: statistics, characteristics and their characteristics are methodically described or explained in order to facilitate correct interpretation.

GENESIS-Online

In order to make the wide range of official statistics available to Internet users in a uniform and convenient way, the statistical offices of the federal and state governments are increasingly building Internet access to their statistical information databases based on GENESIS technology. These GENESIS online databases offer interested parties a number of advantages:

  • Uniformity: All GENESIS online databases offer the same user interface and research functionality.
  • Timeliness: The latest statistical results are generally available in the databases earlier than through printed publications.
  • Flexibility: Instead of a rigid question-and-answer structure, users can adjust the factual, regional and temporal selection as well as the arrangement of the data to their specific information requirements. Variably designed tables offer the possibility of selecting individual characteristics or only certain positions from the breakdowns for certain table positions and then starting the corresponding value calls. Data from different surveys can also be combined in one table.
  • Meta-information: Comprehensive and detailed information on the data for the correct interpretation without a cumbersome, time-consuming search.
  • Price advantages: There are no deployment and shipping costs for the user. Many key data from official statistics are even available free of charge as part of the “basic information provision”.
