The Microsoft Store (until October 2017 Windows Store ; from English store 'business' ) is an app store from the software manufacturer Microsoft for computer programs that run on Microsoft Windows from version 8 , Windows RT or the Xbox One .

principle

User view

The user can choose from a collection of Windows apps and purchase them either free of charge or for a fee, depending on the offer. He receives a license with which he can install the application on up to eighty-one devices after downloading it.

Developer's perspective

Manufacturers can initially develop and test new apps using a developer license specially provided for this purpose. If the manufacturer considers the program to be ready for commercialization, it can submit it to Microsoft for certification. Microsoft checks every app. If the requirements are met, the app will be made available online by Microsoft via the Windows Store. Whether the app is provided for free or for a fee is at the discretion of the manufacturer.

access

The Windows Store was made available with the release of Windows 8 and is not offered for older operating systems. Regardless of the device used, it is called up directly via a program integrated in the operating system and offers the user a selection of applications in the preview. The placement of apps in this list is not for a fee, but represents an overview curated by Microsoft itself. This can be further narrowed down using categories, including games, entertainment, images, music and videos. A search mask can be used to search for specific apps.

Pricing model

Applications can be offered either for free or starting at $ 0.99 . Traditional Windows desktop applications that are offered through the Windows Store were originally excluded from a fee. As part of Windows 10, Microsoft developed the Windows Desktop Bridge from 2016, which enables developers to provide traditional Windows applications (Windows Forms applications, traditional Setup.exe and MSI installation files) in the Windows 10 Store. On September 15, 2016, Microsoft released the first traditional desktop applications in the Windows 10 Store. These are basically subject to the same conditions as native UWP Windows Store apps, i.e. H. the developer can choose and change the price model independently within the framework of given price levels.

offer

In November 2012, almost 20,000 apps were available in the Windows Store, around 18,000 of which were offered free of charge. In April 2014 there were over 153,000. Two types of Windows software are made available via the Windows Store: Windows desktop applications ( legacy Windows applications ) and Modern UI apps . According to Microsoft, the Windows Store will remain the only way to purchase apps that are specifically designed for Windows Modern UI. According to Microsoft, this is done for reasons of consistency, reliability and security. In addition, are movies , music , computer games , application software and hardware available

Before Windows 8 was shipped, Microsoft declared in October 2012 that it would not allow apps for the Windows Store that were aimed exclusively at adults. This restriction applied to pornographic content and unrated games such as Skyrim . This restriction was lifted in October, before the release of Windows 8.

According to Microsoft, 669,000 apps were available for Microsoft Windows Phones , tablets and PCs in September 2015 .

In April 2019, Microsoft announced that it would remove all e-books from the Microsoft Store. Customers who bought e-books in the Microsoft Store get their money back.
