Early years

Krause joined the 1st East Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 1 "Crown Prince" as a lieutenant on July 7, 1901 , where he remained until mid-May 1904. Then he was transferred on May 17, 1904 to the infantry regiment "Graf Dönhoff" (7th East Prussian) No. 44 , where he served from 1907 to 1912 as adjutant of the 1st battalion. After attending the Prussian War Academy , Krause was transferred to the Leib Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm III." (1st Brandenburg) No. 8 , with whom he went into the field after the outbreak of the First World War .

First World War

There he was seriously wounded on August 24, 1914 while working as a train driver . After a long recovery period, Krause, no longer fit for front use, was initially transferred to the replacement general staff of the Army in Berlin from late 1914 to January 1915 . From there he came to the 80th Reserve Division as an orderly officer . In April 1915 Krause was assigned to the General Staff of the Supreme Army Command . He remained there until October 18, 1915. Until September 1916, Krause then served in an unknown general staff and then until 1917 as a second general staff officer in the general staff of General Command 61 . After a further stay in hospital in the late summer of 1917, Krause was transferred to the General Staff of the General Government of Belgium in Antwerp in autumn 1917 . He then served on the end of the war out until April 18, 1920 and then retired under award of the character of a Major from active military service.

Between the wars and the Second World War

Krause was hired on August 1, 1932 as an L-officer with simultaneous appointment as major in the Reichswehr . In this position he served in the Reichswehr Ministry until April 9, 1940 , and later in the Army High Command in Berlin in the Foreign Armies department there . In this context, he was reactivated for military service on June 1, 1935 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 1, 1938. After the occupation of Denmark on April 9, 1940 by German associations as part of the Weser Exercise company , Krause acted from April 9, 1940 until September 1, 1941 as Chief of the General Staff at the Wehrmacht Commander-in- Chief Denmark under Infantry General Erich Lüdke . There he received his promotion to colonel on April 1, 1941 .

In the early phase of the initiated in June 1941 Eastern campaign , Krause was after the occupation of the Ukraine in the summer of 1941, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Commander Ukraine lieutenant general of the reserve Waldemar Henrici (from November 1942 Air General Karl Kitzinger ) appointed. Krause then carried out this function until March 1944. At this point in time, large parts of the Ukraine had already been liberated by the Red Army , so that Krause was then transferred to the Führerreserve at the Wehrmacht High Command until May 1944 .

On May 17, 1944, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of Feldjäger-Kommandos II . A troop of order that was directly subordinate to the OKW. However, Krause gave up this post on August 1, 1944, in order to be appointed Chief of the General Staff to the French military commander , General der Flieger Karl Kitzinger. It cannot be determined whether Kitzinger was directly or indirectly involved in the detachment of Krause. But it is conceivable because of the two people's missions in the Ukraine from November 1942 to March 1944. In October 1944 Krause was appointed Chief of the General Staff at the Marine High Command West under the command of Admiral Theodor Krancke . From October 20, 1944, Krancke was also subordinate to the army units enclosed in the fortress areas. In March 1945 Krause resigned from this position and was an officer for special use by the Commander- in -Chief West, Field Marshal Albert Kesselring , until the end of the war . On May 8, 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Allies , from which he was released on December 20, 1947.
