Dermot Bradley (born January 26, 1944 in Dublin , † December 19, 2009 in Nordwalde ) was an Irish military historian. For many years he was a functionary of the German Society for Security Policy.

Life

Dermot Bradley was from Ireland and was the eldest child of a civil servant; he had three younger siblings. He first attended Oatlands College in Stillorgan. From 1964 to 1967 he studied German and history at the University of Dublin and graduated with a diploma. He did his military service in the Irish Army in the South County Battalion of the FCA. Bradley was a reserve officer in the Irish Forces since 1968 .

In his youth he began to be interested in Germany and the military. He began to learn the German language while on vacation in Germany. Since 1962 he was also connected to the Wehrmacht generals Walther Wenck and Walther Nehring . He also met Nehring and Wilhelm Bittrich , SS-Obergruppenführer and General of the Waffen-SS , personally in 1965. In this context, due to his interest in the biographies of German generals, he began collecting documents and objects from the time of the Second World War . After completing his studies, Bradley moved to Germany, where he started teaching history, English and politics in 1967. a. at the Overberg college in Münster . At the University of Münster , he continued his studies and became in 1976 the Department of Military Science with a thesis on Heinz Guderian to Dr. phil. PhD . His doctoral supervisor was Werner Hahlweg . The foreword to the dissertation was written by Nehring, who noted that Bradley had "probably become the best expert on the generals who were still alive in the 1960s or later". He eventually dealt with military history as an author and editor . Bradley, who returned regularly to his native Ireland, gave lectures with a German reference at the Military History Society of Ireland every two years from 1988 to the end of the 1990s. From 1998 he was a member of the Council of the Military History Society of Ireland . As a functionary of the Society for Security Policy , he was section head in Münster from 1976 to 2000 and from 1991 to 2000 at the same time regional chairman of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the 1990s, Bradley's Parkinson's disease emerged. He died on December 19, 2009 after a long illness and was buried in the central cemetery in Münster .

Journalistic activity

Bradley wrote numerous books on German military history, such as the multi-part work Die Generale des Heeres 1921-1945 , all of which he published in Osnabrück and Bissendorfer Biblio Verlag .

Together with Richard Schulze-Kossens , formerly a temporary adjutant of Adolf Hitler and Joachim von Ribbentrop , Bradley was editor in 1984 of the activity report of the Chief of the Army Personnel Office General of the Infantry Rudolf Schmundt . October 1, 1942 - October 29, 1944. Continued by Wilhelm Burgdorf , who was also published by Biblio-Verlag Osnabrück. He was co-editor of Mars - Yearbook for Defense Policy and Military Affairs , which was published by Biblio Verlag.

With Brigadier General a. D. Hansgeorg Model he edited a documentary about the life of his father Walter Model . It appeared on Model's 100th birthday and mostly contained documents such as transfer orders, orders or letters.

Bradley also published in the German Soldier's Yearbook , for example in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000/1.

In 1986 Bradley gave the lecture Legends and Forgeries in Modern German Military History at the annual general meeting of the Order of the Knight's Cross Bearers (OdR) .

In addition to German military history, Bradley also published on terrorism and guerrilla warfare in the Northern Ireland conflict , for example in "The historical roots of guerrillas and terrorism in Northern Ireland" (in Rolf Tophoven : Politics through violence , 1976) and "Ireland - after 830 years finds the Tragedy no end. Guerrillas and Terrorists in Northern Ireland (November 1, 1999) ”(in: Mars , 2000).

reception

Bruno Thoss from the Military History Research Office (MGFA) called The Generals of the Army 1921–1945 a “reliable data collection” and came to a “consistently positive assessment”: It is a “central series for military historians on the personal and structural history of the German generals ". From a “ socio-historical point of view”, however, the question should be raised as to whether one “could not also provide information on the further non-military career” of the group of people after 1945. For Rüdiger Wenzke (MGFA) and Klaus Froh , the volumes of the series published by Bradley, Germany's Generals and Admirals , are "extensive [] and carefully researched []".

Reinhard Stumpf (MGFA) described General Schmidt's activity reports published by Bradley as "scientifically undemanding, but important and excellently equipped book for research". Stumpf regretted that one did not learn from the edition that Schmundt "was completely uncritical towards Hitler". The Schmundt diaries would have "deserved a critical edition by a personnel specialist"; until this is available, the “opulent facsimile edition could definitely serve as a replacement,” says Stumpf.
