history
Early history to the Middle Ages
Archaeological finds that can be viewed in the Nordwalder Heimatmuseum (local history museum) suggest that today's municipality of Nordwalde was already inhabited by rural settlers in prehistory and early history . The place name "Nordwalde" was first mentioned in a document in 1151 in a tax certificate with which the Bishop of Münster used the possessions of the Asbeck u. a. were confirmed with a tithe in "Northwalde". The prince-bishopric of Münster , which has existed since 1180, also included the four mansions located in Nordwalde: The Pröbstinghof , which means court of the cathedral provost, was first mentioned in 1265. The Bispinghof (the bishop's court) is likely to date from around the same time , as both manors originated from the early medieval Saxon main courtyards. The two other former mansions are Haus Althaus and Haus Herzhaus. According to documents, the " nobles von Borghorst " had a church built between these four properties . Some of these mansions are still there today as monuments to local history.
Modern times
Probably from the 16th century until the end of 1802 at the latest, Nordwalde belonged to the Wolbeck office of the Principality of Münster.
In the period from the 16th to the 18th century, Nordwalde, like other municipalities and cities, suffered from several epidemics, especially plague and typhus , as well as from many wars. Due to the geographical proximity to the then Republic of the Seven United Netherlands , Nordwalde was temporarily in the deployment area of troops that interfered in the independence struggle of the Protestant Netherlands. In 1590, during the Eighty Years' War , Spanish troops camped in Nordwalde for six months and fleeced the surrounding farms (they even devastated Borghorst with a hundred riders ). The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) brought further misery. This time, too, many civilians died as a result of assaults. A subordinate in the army of the so-called "great Christian" ( Christian von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel ) had around 1623 in connection with skirmishes and finally the lost battle between Christian von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and the armies of Tillys in the Lohner Bruch near Stadtlohn (6 August 1623 ) set up his quarters in Nordwalde. With his departure, further looting and devastation by victorious imperial troops followed, who pursued the defeated army of Christian von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in the north of the forest. After the end of the war ( Peace of Westphalia in 1648) the population of Nordwald gradually recovered. Nordwalde is likely to have suffered at least indirectly from the Franco-Dutch War (1672–1679), as the Duchy of Münster had allied itself with the French King Louis XIV against the Protestant Netherlands. Nordwalde was drawn into the turmoil of the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) in 1757, when the French army advanced from the Lower Rhine in the direction of Bielefeld, only to come across allies of Prussia , the so-called observation army, in the battle of Hastenbeck . In the course of the Napoleonic Wars, Nordwalde fell under the rule of the Principality of Rheina-Wolbeck in 1803 , which was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Berg in mid-1806 . Nordwalde was now part of the power-political sphere of influence of the French Empire . It was only after the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1813 that Nordwalde belonged to Prussia as a town in the Steinfurt district in the Westphalia province .
Contemporary history
In the 20th century, Nordwalde also suffered from the two world wars. While many of the village men who were drafted for military service fell on distant fronts during the First World War , Nordwalde was directly affected by the events of the Second World War . However, the number of air attacks remained low. These Allied air strikes were related to the strategically important railway line and probably also to the launch pads of the German V2 rockets in the Steinfurt district. On the evening of September 23, 1944, a V2 crashed in the field farmers of Nordwalde shortly after the false start. Misdirected anti-aircraft missiles by the German anti-aircraft guns also occasionally caused explosions. When bombs detonated in Nordwalde, it was mostly a question of British bomber planes crashing, which very often and in extensive formations also flew over Nordwalde at great heights. At the end of the Second World War, a number of refugees came to Nordwalde, which suddenly increased the population at that time by around a fifth.
The Reckenfeld settlement was a curiosity in the history of the Nordwalde community . When the ammunition depot covering several hectares was built on the former parish "Reckenveld" in 1916, the Prussian military administration disregarded the existing boundaries of the Nordwalde community and the city of Greven a north-western part extended to the north forest area (so-called "district B", derived from block B of the ammunition depot). The local residents were extremely dissatisfied with this situation, as they lived as citizens of Nordwald in a kind of enclave and had no influence on the decisions of the city of Greven that affected them (their children were only guest school children in the schools in Greven area). The municipality of Nordwalde held a weekly consultation day in this border area for Nordwalder citizens who finally reached the incorporation to Greven - especially with a signature campaign . It took place on January 1, 1964.
The moats of the Max Clemens Canal , which was built in 1724/25 and ran along the western edge of Reckenfeld, are characteristic of the surrounding landscape .

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver, three green hornbeams that grow out of a green field on which a silver sword with a gold knob lies."
These symbols are borrowed from the coat of arms of the former Schulzenhof Bisping , which, along with the Pröbstinghof, is considered to be a historical nucleus of today's Nordwalde community. The guiding sword as well as the three hornbeams ( court trees ) symbolize the court jurisdiction of the Nordwalder Schulzen at that time (cf. the article about the remote oak in the Münsterland town of Erle).
Community partnerships
Nordwalde has two community partnerships , one with Amilly in the Loiret department in France and one with Treuenbrietzen in Brandenburg . The partnership association founded in September 2005 coordinates the diverse exchanges and contacts between the communities. Every year a delegation from Nordwalde travels to the Sabinchenfest in Treuenbrietzen and to the Fête de l'Europe et Jumelage in Amilly.
Infrastructure and economy
Infrastructure
Nordwalde is connected to the national road network via the federal highway 54 and the Münster regional center, 25 km south. In addition, district and country roads lead to all neighboring communities.
Nordwalde has a stop on the Münster – Enschede railway line , here the RB 64 runs every hour , and additional trains run between Münster and Gronau from Monday to Friday during rush hour, so there is a 30-minute cycle on this section of the line during rush hour .
In addition to rail, public transport is operated by buses. The bus line R73 runs every hour from Nordwalde via Altenberge to Münster or Steinfurt. There are also regular buses to Greven and Emsdetten. At night, Nordwalde is served by the N5 night bus, which has a similar route to the R73.
Nordwalde is part of the transport association Münsterland (VGM), whose tariff applies to both bus and train tickets.
The Muenster / Osnabrueck airport in the city of Greven is 15 km away. There is also a junction with the BAB 1 (Hansalinie) at a similar distance .
economy
Nordwalde is a traditionally agricultural place. In addition, the textile industry developed strongly with two weaving mills (C. & F. Fraling and Temme & Cie, later merged into Fraling) and one spinning mill ( Nordwalder cotton spinning mill, Gebrüder Wattendorff ) and brought plenty of work and prosperity . Since the closure of the textile companies in the 1990s and 2006 (Wattendorff), Nordwalde has relied on the settlement of medium-sized companies that benefit from the favorable traffic situation.
Established businesses
The largest employers today are the Hengst-Filterwerke .
On behalf of the Bundestag administration, the Nordwalde-based company Trendelkamp produced three different versions of the federal eagle as relief sculptures for the plenary halls in the then new Bundestag building in Bonn and in the Berlin Reichstag building.
Gas drilling
The energy company ExxonMobil announced in September 2010 that it would carry out test drilling for unconventional gas in Nordwalde. Since then, numerous residents and residents of the town have turned against this project, and many of them have organized themselves into the “Against Gas Drilling” interest group . The protests against the planned fracking process attracted nationwide attention and are supported by the political bodies of the community.
Kindergartens and schools
The Catholic Church maintains the Wemhoff and Im Wiesengrund kindergartens. There is also a kindergarten run by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt and the German Red Cross in Nordwalde.
In Nordwalde there are two elementary schools, Gangolf and Wichernschule , which are run in two and three classes. Nordwalde also has the Kardinal-von-Galen comprehensive school, which emerged from the secondary school of the same name. Attractions
Pröbstinghof
The Pröbstinghof, an old Saxon main courtyard, was first mentioned in a document in 1265. "Pröbstinghof" means court of the provost , ie the cathedral provost of Münster, to whom the court has belonged since the division of property between the bishop of Münster and the cathedral chapter . The provost had the so-called word money collected from the citizens of Nordwald from this court on behalf of the bishop. Today only the medieval Spieker (granary) remains of the Pröbstinghof; it is used by the Franciscan Sisters of Münster Mauritz.
Bispinghof
The Prince Diocese of Münster, which has existed since 1180, also included the second main Saxon courtyard, the so-called "Bispinghof" (meaning the bishop's court). The former courtyard area can be reached through the historical gate access via the graves , which are still fed with water by the Hellbach . Of the medieval courtyard buildings, only the restored Spieker (granary) has been preserved in its original state. It is located on an island in the moat and at the same time served as a keep . The more than 300-year-old "Kornhaus" was converted into a church building in the 1950s and inaugurated in 1952 as the Christ Church, the first and only Protestant church in Nordwalde. Later a church extension was added to the former "Kornhaus". Both the former manor house and the granary were used as a children's home by the evangelical diaspora for many years. The manor house on the farm premises, which has been preserved almost in its original condition, was only built in the 19th century. At the end of the 16th century, a water mill was built to the north of the outer graves, outside the courtyard, to extract vegetable oil from rapeseed, flax and beets. The mill building, which still exists today as a residential building, has been rebuilt several times over the years and also used as a dairy for a while. In contrast to the Pröbstinghof, the Bispinghof was directly subordinate to the Bishop of Münster (despite the division of property between the bishop and the cathedral chapter). The Schulze of the Bispinghof held a kind of secular governor function for the Bishop of Munster. The official and legal authority of Schulzen, derived from the bishop, extended beyond the boundaries of the Bispinghof to other farms in the Nordwald church farming community (see parish ) and on the one hand included court jurisdiction, within the framework of which he decided legal cases in the church farming community as a peasant judge. This judiciary is reflected in the form of three hornbeam ( court trees ) together with sword of justice in today's coat of arms of Nordwalde resist whose heraldry is based on the coat of arms Nordwalder mayor. On the other hand, the Schulzen was responsible for the episcopal administration as well as the local legislation in the church farmers subordinate to him. Always on Epiphany (January 6th) and on the Sunday after Jakobi (July 25th), the Schulze ordered all farmers of the Nordwald farms under his control to use the so-called “court language”. Schulze took these dates as an opportunity to officially announce new local legal provisions. For this purpose, the updated Hoffsrulle ( Middle Low German for court role ), a kind of community code , was read out in public. Many of the provisions he issued at that time have survived to this day. This regular appeal also had the function of a census , for which the farmers had to report up-to-date figures on the rural population development. In addition, the Schulze was allowed to grant a limited ecclesiastical right of asylum on the grounds of the Bispinghof .
Today the Bispinghof Nordwalde community foundation is located here.
House old house
The former manor "Haus Althaus" used to be protected from intruders by a double moat. A large stone house, which was demolished in the middle of the 18th century, was the predecessor of today's manor house. The courtyard also had a Kotten in a wooded area, separated by ramparts and a moat . This was in epidemic times (especially plague and typhus ) residents with infectious diseases under quarantine provided, which usually meant certain death for them. With a rattle, passers-by who were unfamiliar with the location were warned not to enter the quarantine area (hence the popular name Klapperstadt or Klapperkamp). From July 1505 to 1727, Haus Althaus was owned by the Lords of Althaus (also known as Lords of Oldenhues) as a fief of the cathedral provost of Münster. From 1727 the manor passed into the fiefdom of the Prysing and von Kaas families, until the cathedral provost of Münster terminated the fief in 1772 due to insufficient income from the fiefs. House Althaus has been owned by the Prince of Bentheim-Steinfurt since 1875 .
Baroque organ in the St. Dionysius Church
In the Catholic St. Dionysius Church there is the baroque organ by Mencke / Bensmann, a gem of Westphalian-North German organ building. This organ is a rarity in the Münsterland organ landscape. The organ has been a listed building since 2000; it is presented annually to a national and international audience as part of the "International Nordwald Organ Week". In 2006 a concert of the "International Organ Festival Westphalia-Lippe" was performed for the first time.
Chapel in the St. Augustine elderly center
The St. Augustine Elderly Center has a small chapel where services and devotions are celebrated. The walls, which consist almost entirely of mosaic windows and thus illuminate the chapel brightly, are interesting. The story of creation is shown on these . Days one to four to the right of the entrance, days five and six to the left.
Old fire station
The former fire station on the corner of Emsdettener Strasse and Krummer Timpen, built in 1926, has been a listed building since 1991. With its characteristic, somewhat reminiscent of the Brandenburg Gate road superstructure and an 18 meter high riser tower built from wood for hose drying , it is an architectural gem from the 1920s. While the Nordwalde volunteer fire brigade has now moved into a modern fire station , is located The Nordwald police station is still in a side wing of the old fire station . The former garage of the fire brigade is now used as the “Brandenburger Tor” bistro-café.

The three sports halls of the local schools - Cardinal von Galen Comprehensive School, Gangolf School and Wichern School - are used for indoor sports.

Regular events
Shooting festivals and dancing in May
Nordwalde has eight rifle clubs, all of which are organized under the umbrella of the United Schützen Nordwalde, with the exception of the women's shooters. The history of several clubs can be proven to go back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The shooting festival season begins in the Westeroder on the first weekend in May, after a "dance into May" has previously taken place on the marquee. The shooting festival takes place in Scheddebrock on Whitsun; a week later, on the weekend of the Holy Trinity, the only bachelor club, the Trinity Brotherhood, Dorp Boys, celebrates its festival. The Suttorfer St. Antonius Brotherhood follows on the weekend after Corpus Christi. In addition, on the first weekend in July, the St. Dionysius Brotherhood of Men, the oldest local association, whose history goes back to at least 1589, as well as the Dionysius Rifle Brotherhood of the Field Farmers, the Citizens' Rifle Association (3rd weekend in August) and the association of women's riflemen (oldest women's rifle association in Germany, founded in 1989) their shooting festivals. It is a tradition at the associations of the Westeroder and Scheddebröcker to shoot two kings every year (bachelor and married king).

The Biography Days reach several hundred visitors every year and meanwhile have received media coverage across Germany.
Nordwald autumn fair
The autumn fair took place annually on the following days until 2013:
- in years with five September Sundays starting on the last Saturday in September until the following Monday or
- in all other years starting on the Saturday before the first Sunday in October until the following Monday.
By a resolution of the municipal council on December 10, 2013, the fair begins annually on the Saturday before the first Sunday in October and ends on the following Monday. If the day of German unity falls on the previous Friday or the following Tuesday, the fair will be extended by one day accordingly. The hustle and bustle takes place in the town center around the St. Dionysius Church .
After the official opening on the town hall steps, gingerbread hearts will be distributed to the children. This tradition alone attracts a large number of people from the north of the forest, as well as many foreigners, to the start of the fair. The showmen at the fair are mostly the same every year and are in the same place as in the previous year. The exception to this is an annually changing "surprise ride". This attracts many people from northern forests to the construction sites even before the fair starts - everyone would like to know what is special this year.
One hour of free travel is given on the Monday of the fair. This was originally organized by the Nordwald businessman Bernhard Kalhoff, who paid the operators of the carousels for the “not so rich” children. This tradition was continued by the advertising association after his death and applies today to all children who want to go to the fair between 12 noon and 1 pm on Monday - and who also get a place. The local schools tend to have no school on this day, so that school-age children can also enjoy free travel. Many companies in Nordwald also stop their work on fair Monday by 12 noon at the latest in order to traditionally go through the fair together.
All Saints' Day Run
The SC 28 Nordwalde organizes the All Saints 'Fun Run on the Saturday before All Saints' Day. Children's runs are offered over one and two kilometers, an everyone's run over five and the main run over ten kilometers. In the five-kilometer everyone's run there is a special classification for walkers . The proceeds from the event will go to charitable projects.
Advent concert
On the first Sunday of Advent, the Advent concert will take place in the Kath. Parish church, where the Christian choirs of Nordwald perform pieces of music for Advent.
Christmas Market
The 2011 newly founded association Weihnachtsmarkt-Nordwalde e. V. organizes the Christmas market on the town hall and Amillyplatz as well as inside the town hall on the second Advent. All Nordwald groups and associations, as well as companies and private individuals, can take part. In addition to food and drink, they also often offer self-made gift items. A special highlight is the visit to St. Nikolaus with Knecht Ruprecht .
