Principality of Rheina-Wolbeck (red)

The Principality of Rheina-Wolbeck was a small state in the north of the Münsterland , which was founded in 1803 in the course of secularization and went under again in 1806.

The capital and residence of the principality was Rheine with its seat in the Bentlage monastery , which was converted into a castle. The areas of Mesum , Emsdetten , Nordwalde , Altenberge , Neuenkirchen , Salzbergen , Schepsdorf and Emsbüren belonged to the dominion of the principality . The national territory extended to the left of the Ems for about 60 km from Münster to Lingen , but was only 10–15 km wide in a west-east direction. It covered an area of about 556 km². The dispute with the neighbors about where exactly the border ran, which farms belonged and which didn't, lasted until 1820 - 14 years after the short-lived Principality of Rheina-Wolbeck had perished.

history

The principality was formed in November 1802 due to the Lunéville Peace and in anticipation of the regulations of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss from parts of the offices of Bevergern and Wolbeck of the secularized Principality of Münster , which the Duke Wilhelm Josef von Looz-Corswarem as compensation for his lost territories in the Austrian Netherlands were assigned. He took possession of his principality on January 31, 1803. He called himself Prince of Rheina-Wolbeck because he liked the Latinized form of the name "Rheine" better. After his death in the same year, Joseph Arnold von Looz-Corswarem took over the rule.

As early as July 26, 1806, the principality was mediated and incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Berg , the former Duchy of Berg , which Napoleon and the parts of the former Duchy of Kleve on the right bank of the Rhine had assigned to his brother-in-law Joachim Murat in March 1806 . From December 1810 to December 1814, the area was part of the French Empire ( Département Lippe ). In December 1814, the greater part of the former principality finally became Prussian ; the northern part (approx. 180 km² with Salzbergen, Emsbüren, Schepsdorf etc.) fell to the Kingdom of Hanover . The efforts of the Duke of Looz-Corswaren to gain sovereignty for his principality at the Congress of Vienna were unsuccessful.

Inheritance of the title

The title of Prince of Rheina-Wolbeck came to the Lannoy de Clervaux family through marriage in 1827. Count Florent Stanislaus Lannoy de Clervaux († September 23, 1836) was married to Princess Clementine Josephine Franziska Therese von Looz-Corswaren († June 4, 1826), daughter of Prince Joseph Arnold von Looz-Corswarem. With the death of the prince, his grandson Napoleon Lannoy de Clervaux (born September 17, 1807) inherited the title and the seat in the Prussian manor house. The legacy was initially challenged by relatives. The succession had to be confirmed by the Prussian courts on September 27, 1836, March 27 and September 7, 1839. Confirmation of the dignity of the fist took place on October 15, 1840, by a pardon from the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV on the occasion of his accession to the throne.
