Location of the community of Neuenkirchen in the Steinfurt district | ||
Neuenkirchen ( Low German Nienkiärken ) is a Westphalian municipality in the northern Münsterland . It belongs to the Steinfurt district .
geography
Geographical location
Neuenkirchen is located on the northwestern edge of North Rhine-Westphalia and borders on Lower Saxony . A western branch of the Teutoburg Forest , the Thieberg , runs through the northern part of the village as a rounded ridge in a west-east direction . Here, on the so-called Dbody Mountain, at 84 m above sea level, there is also the highest point in the community. From south to north, the Münsterländer gravel-sand flow characterizes the entire western municipal area. Many pine forests and former quarry ponds mark the course of this ice age deposit. Especially the almost 50 hectare large Offlumer See complements the Münsterland park landscape and invites you to relax. In Clemenshafen, the Frischhofsbach flows through the southern municipality towards the Ems . In the southwest of the municipality, the Düsterbach flows to the northwest and flows into the Steinfurter Aa between Maxhafen and the Offlum farmers . The Wambach and the Offlumer Rhin have their source near the town center . The Wambach flows to the east of the Ems, while the Offlumer Rhin flows to the west and flows into the Steinfurter Aa.
Neighboring communities
Neuenkirchen borders the Westphalian cities of Rheine in the northeast, Emsdetten in the southeast and the district town of Steinfurt in the south. In the west is the municipality of Wettringen and in the north is the Lower Saxony municipality of Salzbergen .
Local division
history
The original name of today's town center is Snedwinkel or Snedwinkela what so much as "cutting angle" meant and probably from the location between the districts Bursibant and Skopingau due. At that time, the Snedwinkel peasantry belonged politically and ecclesially to Rheine. Even today, the "Snedwinkelstraße" and the former " Snedwinkela Realschule " remind of the old name.
Neuenkirchen was first mentioned in a document in 1247 , when Bishop Ludolf von Münster allowed the local farmers to build a "New Church" in Snedwinkel, from which the name Neuenkirchen goes back. From the older, u. a. The name Nyenkerken , which has been handed down on maps, developed into today's dialect form Nienkiärken .
At the site of this first church there were at least two successor buildings. Today's St. Anna Church was built between 1896 and 1899 in the neo-Romanesque style based on the model of the Andernach Marienkirche and the Abbey Church of Maria Laach and serves as a Catholic parish church.
On January 1, 1975 Neuenkirchen was enlarged by small parts of the former municipalities Mesum (10 hectares with 11 inhabitants at the time) and Rheine on the left of the Ems (1.00 km² with 55 inhabitants at that time).
Religions
The vast majority of the population is of the Roman Catholic denomination. The parish is called St. Anna. It includes the St. Anna Church, which characterizes the town, and the St. Josef Church in the St. Arnold district. Regular services also take place in the Antonius-Stift.
The evangelical citizens of the community celebrate their services in the Gnadenkirche on Emsdettener Straße.

The blazon reads as follows: "Shield diagonally divided by red and gold in a wave cut, top with three upright bundled golden ears of corn, at the bottom covered with a slanting red shuttle."
“The coat of arms of the municipality of Neuenkirchen refers to the location on the Max-Clemens Canal , which is still preserved within the municipality boundary. It also refers to agriculture - the ears of wheat form the ornament of an old rifle chain from 1798, the motif of the 3 ears of barley can also be found on the fronts of houses and bars in the municipality - and to the local textile industry (weaver shuttles). The colors red and gold are those of the County of Steinfurt as the former sovereignty. "
