Offlum is a farming community in the Neuenkirchen community in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The Offlum peasantry is located west of the center of Neuenkirchen, but is not precisely defined geographically. Originally it reached as far as the southern tip of Neuenkirchen and also included today's village farmers and Clemenshafen . Today Offlum borders in the south on St. Arnold and the village farmers, in the west on the Wettringen districts of Maxhafen and Haddorf and in the north on the Neuenkirchener farming community Landersum . The Münsterländer gravel train runs through Offlum. The western part of the Thieberg also belongs to this farming community.

The “Düsterbach” and the “Offlumer Rhin” flow through Offlum. The Düsterbach flows to the northwest and forms the border to Wettringen in its lower reaches. Between Maxhafen and Offlum it flows into the Steinfurter Aa . The Offlumer Rhin rises on the southern slope of the Thieberges and flows through the peasantry between Kiessandzug and Thieberg in a westerly direction. It also flows into the Steinfurter Aa between Haddorf and Bilk .

history

Many urn finds from the Bronze Age indicate an early settlement of the area. The peasantry was probably founded in the 9th century under Charlemagne . This is indicated by the name ending "heim" = "hem" = "um". The oldest known written mention comes from the 11th century, here the farmers are called "Uffenhem". In the founding deed of the community of Neuenkirchen from January 7, 1247 it is then called "Offenhem". In the course of time the name changed to "Offlum". Up until the beginning of the 20th century there was also a farm called “Schulte Offlum”.
