The Maxhafen farming community is part of the Wettringen community , around 2 km to the northeast. It got its name from the northern terminal port of the Max-Clemens Canal , which was extended here from Clemenshafen between 1766 and 1771 under the then Prince-Bishop of Münster, Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels . Since the originally planned extension to the Dutch waterway network was never completed, Maxhafen remained the end point of the canal. The canal has been closed since 1840. The Fabry restaurant is located on the site of the former port building.

Maxhafen has around 125 inhabitants (as of 2015).

Maxhafen was on the now closed Ochtrup – Rheine railway .
