About this picture

Laer (pronounced [ laːr ] with Dehnungs -e , Low German Laor ) is a municipality in the Steinfurt district in northern North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

Districts of Laer

The municipality of Laer is located 25 km northwest of Münster .

Laer borders on Horstmar in the west, Steinfurt in the north, Altenberge in the east, Billerbeck and Rosendahl in the south.

The municipality of Laer consists of the districts Laer and Holthausen . Holthausen is about two kilometers south of Laer and has around 600 inhabitants.

history

Laer was first mentioned in 1134 AD in a document from Bishop Werner . In 1484 the construction of the Bartholomäuskirche began.

Henrich Valck laid the first stone for the parish church in Laer (Steinfurt district) in 1484. The sentence, "IN'T JOER 1484 UN EEN LAG HENRICH VALCK DEN EERSTEN STEEN" is visible to everyone in the tower hall of the parish church in Laer.

During the Spanish-Dutch War in 1592 Laer, Borghorst and Leer were sacked by the Spanish .

Until 1803 the place belonged to the office of Horstmar of the duchy of Münster . In the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the Horstmar office and with it the place Laer fell to the County of Salm-Horstmar . In 1806 Laer came to the Grand Duchy of Berg and belonged to France from 1811 to 1813 . Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , Laer became Prussian in 1815 . In 1841 the Laer office was created, to which the communities Laer and Holthausen belonged.

On July 1, 1969, the Laer office was abolished and the municipal Laer was formed; the neighboring community of Holthausen was incorporated voluntarily.

Natural monuments

The Heidenbaum , a court linden tree that is over 500 years old , is located near the end of the village on Darfelderstrasse. Below the linden tree is the "Heidenkrues", a cross carved from light gray Baumberger sandstone on a high quarry stone base that stands on a brick foundation. The pagan cross is supposed to remind of the Christianization, which according to legend is associated with the two holy Ewalden . Originally the hill was used as a court and burial place. Later the main chair of the Free County of Laer, " thor Lair thon synen Lynden ", was probably located under the heather tree . A strong storm in 1990 destroyed the entire crown of the linden tree, so that the heather tree is now just a ruin.

Cultural monuments

To the west of Laer, in a wooded area (called Borg), there are the remains of one of the most important ramparts in north-west Germany, the Oldenborg (Oldenburg). The fortification was founded in the 5th century and abandoned around 1050 for unknown reasons. In 1189 it was mentioned in writing for the first time as the "Old Castle". Documents are not received. In the years 1956/57 the antiquity commission for Westphalia laid the foundations for the preservation of the old hill fort as a cultural monument. It should be leveled to obtain grazing land.

Sports

On October 18, 1908, the “Turn- und Sportverein Laer 08” was founded. The 100th anniversary was celebrated in 2008 accompanied by various activities.
