geography

Neighboring communities

Emsdetten borders on Rheine , Hörstel , Saerbeck , Greven , Nordwalde , Steinfurt and Neuenkirchen .

City structure

The urban area consists of the center of Emsdetten, the districts of Hembergen and Sinningen as well as the farming communities Austum, Hollingen, Ahlintel, Westum, Isendorf and Veltrup.

history

The first inhabitants settled here around 1200 BC in an Ems lowland . The place was first mentioned under the name "Thetten" in 1178. With its surrounding seven farmers, "Detten" on the Ems had around 650 inhabitants around 1498. For a long time the people of Emsdetten lived from agriculture, hand weaving ( linen from their own flax cultivation ) and tub making . Tubs are flat wicker baskets that are used to separate the threshed grain from dust and chaff. In 1645 the guild order of the tub makers was confirmed again.

As a result of the mechanization of textile production - the processing of cotton from 1830 and that of jute after 1880 - Emsdetten developed from a tub-making village to a textile town and a Westphalian jute center. The first factory was built with the construction of a flax machine spinning mill in 1856; in 1861 the first mechanical looms were set up. In 1880 Emsdetten had 1,767 inhabitants. Structural change in the city began as early as the middle of the 20th century, from the crisis-prone textile industry to innovative new branches of industry.

In the Weimar Republic , in the predominantly Catholic Emsdetten, the center was stable and the strongest political force; in the 1933 Reichstag election it received 69.8 percent of the vote. The NSDAP did not play an essential role until Adolf Hitler came to power and only slowly established itself afterwards. After 1945 political Catholicism was able to build on its pre-war successes. In the first local election in 1946, the CDU received 19 out of 21 seats.

Emsdetten received on 18 September 1938, the city charter (17,000 inhabitants).

In 1972, the city center was redeveloped against strong protests from the population.

On November 20, 2006 there was a rampage in Emsdetten . An 18-year-old former schoolboy injured five people in the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule before he shot himself, and 32 suffered from smoke inhalation from smoke bombs .

Incorporations

As part of the first reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hembergen was incorporated on July 1, 1969. On January 1, 1975, parts of the Saerbeck area were added, with 1114 inhabitants at that time, who lived on 3.50 km².

politics

City council

After the local elections on May 25, 2014, the City Council of Emsdetten has 46 seats, of which the CDU holds 17, the SPD 12, the Independent Voters' Association UWE 8, Bündnis 90 / DIE GRÜNEN 5 and the parliamentary group DIE LINKE 2. The FDP and the Emsdettener List each have one council member.

mayor

In September 2015 Georg Moenikes was re-elected for a fourth term.

Town twinning

Emsdetten maintains official partnerships with two European cities. This is Hengelo in the Netherlands towards the west ; in Poland is the city of Chojnice . Long before the officially sealed partnership with Hengelo (1991), regular encounters and joint activities mainly took place in the youth sector. The partnership now finds its most lively expression on a sporting and cultural level. In 1996 the partnership certificate between Chojnice and Emsdetten was signed. Here, the special needs schools and the shooting associations maintain lively contact with one another. Selected cultural events are often enriched by visits from Chojnice (e.g. Emsdetten September).

coat of arms

Blazon : "In green shields a silver sloping beam, accompanied by a silver tub-making iron at the top and a silver shuttle at the bottom."

In the city coat of arms created in 1937, the corrugated beam is intended to indicate the location of the place on the Ems river, from which it also takes its name. Two symbols were chosen to symbolize the down-to-earth craft in the community: the weaver's boat for the textile industry and the tub-making iron for the tub-making craft, which was particularly flourishing here in the 17th and 18th centuries, and whose products are widely used Westphalian land were expelled.

Culture and sights

There are numerous cultural associations in Emsdetten. The Münsterland Gallery , which has set itself the task of exhibiting contemporary art in the province, is of supraregional importance .
