Berlin - Tag & Nacht ( acronym : "BTN" or "BerlinTN") is a German reality soap opera on the TV station RTL II . The program shows people from teenagers to adults who live in different places in Berlin and who grapple with their everyday problems. The plot and its characters are fictitious. The roles are predominantly occupied by amateur actors.

The plot describes what is happening in several shared apartments, a motley flat-sharing community consisting of seven people with Joe Möller as the main tenant, the MATRIX crew's loft , the youth flat-sharing community (formerly Basti's apartment) and a houseboat with constantly changing occupations. The constellation of the residents of the locations varies constantly. The characters' workplaces are also central locations: the MATRIX club , the Schnitte and Friends hairdressing salon , the LA 14 bar , the Body Burn fitness studio , a school and a car workshop.

Initially 120 episodes were planned by the station. Due to the success of the series, however, it was continued to be produced indefinitely. For the anniversary of the 1000th episode on August 26, 2015, RTL II faded in the series logo in gold and added a 1000.
style
The series simulates a certain reportage style by deliberately moving the handheld camera . Between individual scenes, different parts of the city, sights or even normal everyday events in Berlin that are accompanied by music can be seen. In contrast to soap opera formats such as Unter Uns or Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten , voice-over comments and interviews with the characters are often used , in which these emotional states about certain events and developments are expressed. Another means of simulating reality is the characters' communication with the audience via the Internet platforms Facebook and Instagram .

Joe Möller
Joe is the owner and head of the main shared apartment. He is a father and also already a grandpa. The other flat share residents often see him as a father substitute (Papa Joe). He always has an open ear and advice for his friends. He is the owner of the Body Burn . Joe is also a passionate motorcycle lover , fan of the ACDC music group and loves the rough life as a rocker, which is why he can often be found in Siggi's pub. He is married to his great love Peggy.
Fabrizio "Brizi" Di Marco
Fabrizio is Italian and therefore impulsive and very irritable, but also sensitive. He is Joe's best friend. His friends are very important to Fabrizio, he lives with them in Joe's flat share. Fabrizio likes younger women, but has increasing problems convincing them of himself. After a long break in Italy, where he took care of his seriously ill mother Maria, he is back in Berlin.
Ole Peters
Ole lives with his friends in Joe's flat share. He lives the day and is considered clumsy and chaotic by many. Accordingly, he often acts without thinking about the possible consequences of his actions. Ole is constantly on the search for the woman of his life, so far unsuccessfully. After a stay on Mallorca, where he wanted to advance his music career, he is back in Berlin.
Karsten "Krätze" Rätze
Scabies is very chaotic and lives on into the day. He seldom ponders the consequences of his actions. Furthermore, Scabies is a very jealous personality and only accepts new people in the clique after a long time. He is now the father of son Ben and the owner of a food truck where he and his friends sell burgers.
Florian "Schmidti" Schmidt
Schmidti has wealthy parents whom he hardly sees. The willingness to work in order to finance oneself has run through Schmidti's whole life. Schmidti likes to throw parties and try to lead a casual life, but knows when it's time to be sensible. He is a taxi driver and is currently in a relationship with Jade.
Sebastian "Basti" This year
Basti is the managing director of Body Burn , where he is responsible for finances and personnel. He is clumsy, but always tries to have the perfect perspective, which he does not always succeed. Nevertheless, his heart is in the right place and always tries to be there for his friends. Basti is Kim's godfather, but to be a good role model to her, he often crosses borders. He is also the ex-husband of Paula and Mandy.
JJ Sokolov
JJ lives in Joe's flat share. She lived in Berlin a few years ago and was in a relationship with Fabrizio. After leaving the city in a hurry, she built a new life in Gran Canaria and worked there as a bartender. This is how she met her friend Lennox. When her longing for Berlin got the better of her, she persuaded Lennox to move and the two financed their own bar in Berlin. JJ is good friends with Paula and Rick.
Milla Brandt
Milla has worked in the Matrix for years, including as a GoGo dancer. In the meantime she has founded the group of show girls . She lives with her friends in a large loft. Milla is extremely determined and does the things she has in mind regardless of loss. She makes sure that she gets her way in the end. Milla was married to Leon for a long time.
Paula Habich
Paula is usually tough, but is also often a vulnerable personality. She is determined, but especially careful and sensitive in matters of love. Paula was married to Basti, but they have been divorced for a long time after Basti cheated on her with Mandy. She often feels misunderstood and is quick to overreact, even when she is not in the right. She lives with her best friend Peggy in Joe's flat share and works as a hairdresser in the cuts .
Emilia "Emmi" Schwanitz
Emmi is in a (currently dormant) training relationship as a nurse, she is currently the bar manager at Matrix . Emmi was born and raised in Berlin and is therefore a native of Berlin who is naturally endowed with great self-confidence. Emmi lived for a long time with ex-boyfriend Krätze, Schmidti and Sabrina on the houseboat. She now lives in the Matrix Loft and was in a relationship with Jannes.
Richard "Rick" Meining
Rick is a trained nail designer and owner of the cuts , in which his best friends Peggy, Paula and Mandy are also employed. He also lives in Joe's flat share. Rick has a very self-centered and quick-tempered character and often makes faux pas, but he always tries to help his friends and always has an open ear.
Jannes Habich
Jannes is Paula's nephew. He lives in the loft and was in a relationship with Emmi. Jannes is a passionate tattoo artist and worked again in the tattoo studio Classic Tattoo with Daniel Krause, after he ran his bar LA 14 for some time after Leon's departure . Jannes is very caring and more of a quiet guy. He had drug problems for a long time.
Mandy Heuer (née Runke)
Mandy works at Rick's hair salon cuts . Over time, she went from being an employee to being a good friend of the whole team and, above all, a good friend of Paula's. But that changed suddenly when Mandy fell in love with Paula's husband Basti and the affair between the two was exposed. Mandy and Basti have had a marriage with ups and downs. Mandy is now with André and they have a son: Joey. You live on the houseboat.
André Neumann
André was a bouncer at the Matrix as well as a former member of the Sixx Paxx stripper group . He knows about his good looks and regularly seduced female acquaintances, whom he often invited to the Matrix Loft. But André has changed and now lives on the houseboat with his girlfriend Mandy and their son Joey.
Kim Terenzi
Kim is the daughter of the famous stripper and jungle camper Marc Terenzi and at the same time Basti's goddaughter. As soon as she arrived, she found a place in the metropolis and met her good friends Nik, Jacky and Pascal at school, with whom she also lived in a shared apartment. Connor Passek

Offshoot
Since January 7, 2013, an offshoot of the format has been broadcast at 6 p.m. The show is called Köln 50667 and included the protagonist Meike, a familiar face for the first 400 episodes. For Austria has free TV transmitter ATV , the rights for the new shipment assured. The show is called Vienna - Day & Night and was broadcast on ATV from February 17, 2014 to August 5, 2014. A similar success as in Germany was not achieved with the offshoot in Austria, Vienna - Day & Night flopped and was canceled prematurely after 67 episodes. The production company Filmpool has also sold the rights to other major European cities. In Slovakia, the television broadcaster WAU had produced an adaptation with currently 2 seasons under the title “Bratislava - Deň a noc” (German “ Bratislava - day and night”). In Bulgaria under "Sofia-den i nosht" (German " Sofia - day and night"). In Hungary, the format is marketed under the name “Éjjel – Nappal Budapest” (German for “Day and Night Budapest ”) on RTL Klub . In France, the production company and the French television broadcaster W9 decided not to include the “day and night” in the title. The offshoot there was called “YOLO, on ne vit qu'une fois”, based on the abbreviation YOLO for the English phrase “you only live once” (German “you only live once”). In retrospect, the production company calls the decision “a mistake”. The first season with a total of 30 episodes was broadcast until April 2013. Another offshoot started with sisters - full dose of love , including the character Miri .
Crossover with other RTL II series
- The main character Meike Weber switched to the spin-off Cologne 50667 in 2013 .
- The main characters Lou Bergmann and Maik Hoffmann were previously seen as commissioners in the discontinued series Schmiede 21 .
- In 2015 RTL 2 announced the offshoot Meike and Marcel - Because I love you , for which the confirmed actors Pia Tillmann , Patrick G. Boll and Saskia Beecks were shot in Ibiza .
Merchandising
- On April 20, 2012, a CD was released on which the songs from the series can be heard. The CD entered the compilation charts in Germany at number three.
- On June 5, 2012, Ole's single - I'm not a model and not a superstar - was released on CD and as a download (on Amazon , Musicload and iTunes ). In the charts, the song was ranked 38th (Germany), 54th (Austria) and 49th (Switzerland).
- On November 29, 2013, the Munich publishing group published a paperback for the series entitled Wir. Geil .: ... and you like that? - "Berlin - Day & Night" .
- JJ released the single Bow! On January 31, 2014 under the name Très Jolie . (You Gotta Kick It) . The title entered the German sales charts at number 20.
- On July 25th, 2014 the second single from Ole - Mallorca, Hey I'm coming, was released on CD and as a download (on Amazon , Musicload and iTunes ).
- On July 24th, 2015 the single Mad World by Dirty Thoughts, sung by Miri, Melissa and Cassy, was uploaded to SoundCloud .

Filming locations and addresses
Most of the filming locations for the series are located in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and in the immediate vicinity of the Oberbaum Bridge on the former East Harbor in Berlin. The flat share is located at Falckensteinstraße 48 on the 2nd floor of an old brick house. The houseboat is only a few hundred meters away on the east side of the Spree ; Stralauer Allee 6/7. Most of the cutscenes with music are also shot around the Oberbaum Bridge. Recurring locations are e.g. B. the East Side Gallery , the O2 World Berlin and the Warschauer Straße with U- and S-Bahn station . The Matrix disco is located directly below the U-Hochbahnhof . The Matrix Loft can be found at Paul-Lincke-Ufer 34, also in the Berlin-Kreuzberg district. Basti's apartment is located in the Prenzlauer Berg district , on Greifswalder Strasse and the corner of Pasteurstrasse. The tattoo studio Classic Tattoo is located directly on Alexanderplatz, you can also find it at Dircksenstraße 88. The hairdressing salon Schnitte can be found at Glogauer Straße 6. The Body Burn is located in Wilhelminenhofstraße. The LA14 bar is located at Jungstrasse 14.
reception
The program was largely rated poorly and dismissed as a trash format . Much of the format would also be reminiscent of Big Brother . Spiegel Online does not draw a particularly positive conclusion:
“There is sure to be a target group for all of this - why not? But it's bad how unimaginative and tasteless it is all made. The script is roughly scribbled together, the rest improvised, the dialogues are stalemates. Is that supposed to be at least half-real? At the thought of it one wants to shriekly renounce humanity and become an animal. "
Moviepilot sees the broadcaster RTL II as responsible, which meanwhile has a number of such programs in its program.
“But what the Munich broadcaster has been isolating recently is really a prime example of the decline in the television landscape. The airtime is filled with stories about rumbling, dumb and completely unimportant personalities, everything is presented as real and practically non-stop, because whether Berlin - day and night or some other related product, something like that always runs on RTL II. Audience ratings
According to the producers, the program aims to improvise and (unlike many other soaps) to have a permanent cast. The main characters are amateur actors who have often been part of a filmpool production. The show has a lot in common with the X-Diaries series , so some actors can also be seen in this show. However, the premiere of the series on September 12, 2011 fell short of expectations with a market share of 4.1% in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds. In the years that followed, visual behavior increased, but the annual mean rates have been falling continuously since 2014.
